A "Rotten Girl," (Fujoshi) or a Noble spoiled woman ( Kifujin), I like my  BLs  much as I like my men, raw,  dark and a bit on the spicy side.  However, there are those BLs that feel like an old friend or warm hug, the cute and fluffy variety. Those BLs also hold a special place in this cold heart of mine.

China used to be No.1 in my arsenal of BL weaponry...until the ban that is,  a ban that robbed us of what was and what could have been. But in recent years and with the aid of other countries such as the Singapore, they are slowly clawing their way back to the top. Current favourites are Japan, who veer between dark and edgy and cutesy overload. They've come a long way since the endings where inevitably, our hero would invariably slip of this mortal coil soon after finding love.

Next in line is Taiwan. Now there's a country who knows how to pull on the heartstrings, whilst also not afraid of pulling punches. Then we have South Korea, although they seem to have lost their way a little recently with the 2 min vertical reels. But still, they do a good line in endearing,  charming, enchanting and damn right silly.

And talking of silly, we have Thai Bl who reside at the bottom of my list. This is an industry that firmly believe in the power of the BL trope. Why use one trope when you can use every single mofo one of them? They delight in drowning the viewer in a sea of cheesy dialogue, over acting and unfinished storylines. BUT when they do well, they outshine all others, eg "Shine."

BL Tropes that make me want to commit acts of violence.

  • Top place is reserved for the dreaded "dead fish kiss." -This is a kiss that has all the passion of...well, a dead fish. Frankly, I'd rather see no kissing than two men who appear on the verge of exploding if they shift their faces or open their mouths wider than an inch.
  • Countless flashbacks or recaps-These  take up at least 50% of some drama, which means an episode stated to be 30 mins, will in fact be 15-20 mins if we allow for the flashbacks and recaps...yeah, I'm looking at you Japan.
  • "I'm not gay. I just like you."-I get it, homosexuality is still seen as a taboo in most Asian countries, and yes, there are those who don't see gender but rather the person behind the  organisms that is the basis of their reproductive roles. But for me, this statement undermines what is is to be queer and the difficulties faced in expressing oneself without fear of prejudice and judgement.
  • A pat on the head-An action that may be seen as a sign of affection, romance, praise and intimacy in East Asian contexts like Japan and Korea, is often seen as rude and condescending in the Western realm and it's that connotation that I can't seem to see beyond. Even my cat stares at me as though he'd like to exhibit a roundhouse kick to my head whenever I pat him on the head...but then he thinks he's people.
  • The Piggyback-Dude, if you get so drunk that you cannot walk unaided, don't bloody drink! Seriously, hold your liquor and if you can't, make sure to have a cab or Uber ready. My back is not for your drunken arse or the possibility of dribble/vomit/alcohol filled bladder to empty themselves upon my carcass.
  • Acting shy after intimate moments or after being in a relationship-They've just explored each other's bodies, kissed areas that are frankly downright unhygienic and all before doing the 'horizontal boogie.' (sex) And yet the next morning, one of them will still manage to let loose a gasp followed by a look of absolute shock and horror when their partner exits a bathroom wrapped in a  strategically placed towel. (How does it not fall down?!)
  • Being fully clad after a full on sex scene in which both couples get nekkid-And yet the very next morning after a night of  sinful sinning, the clothes fairy magically twirls their wand and flippity fuckity foo, both men are firmly encased within their post-coital clothing.
  • The weak constitution of BL men-Heaven forbid that these men should step out in the rain or low temperatures, because one drop of moisture or cold gust of wind, will have them feverish and bedbound and having to be spoon-fed congee, which they never finish.
  • The inevitable break up before getting back together again-This is a trope older than time itself and needs no explanation.

Things I dislike about BL fans that makes me want to grab them by the throat. (An ever expanding list)

  • Those who down vote dramas/movies because they don't like the 'visuals'-It's okay to down vote a drama/comedy/film because the story was uneventful or the acting wasn't on par, but to lower a score because the cast or someone in the cast weren't good looking enough, is an anathema to me. The fact that there are people out there and on here who would base looks over content, is something that I cannot and will never understand.
  • Those who piss on other people's preferences -For some people, if they don't like something, than neither should the rest of us. Themes that will have them induced in a fit of apocalyptic rage  include age gaps, older people, NSW and NC scenes.
