There is an alternative ending; episode 31 that is happy. I personally wouldnt classify the orinigal ending; episode 30 as happy. But it is up to interpretation.

To me at least, it did not appear that she was the only one that was somewhat shallow. He liked her before he even knew her just because she was pretty. And his ex- fiancee was also very pretty. And even though everyone kept talking about how plain her new face was, it was also really pretty in my opinion. And he literally told her at one point, her new, so called plain face was not is type. So at least throughout the series he never dated or liked anyone that could be considered ugly. Therefore, I just thought of it as two people getting together and looks were important to both of them.
