And I also don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but are rom-coms dead in K-drama Land??? It certainly feels that…
If you've started watching k-dramas directly since Boys over Flowers, you will definitely be worn out. Perhaps too much. I think the Netflix partnerships have allowed writers and producers to explore mature storylines and complex characters. Allowing writers to really cook and push the genres. Not to mention the subjects that are controversial in both countries, namely bullying and suicide. It's Okay to not be Okay, Queen of Tears, and Perfect Marriage Revenge are perfect examples of stories that would have floundered back then if they remained only rom-coms. There is still romance and great comedy blended in with these new shows, but they're so much more complex and realistic. The latter being so important today as we've gotten more and more annoyed with cringy comedies, especially in a post-BOF's world. I can safely suggest any of those 3 titles I mentioned to people I know who love rom-coms and I think they would be greatly surprised.
"Did her brain stop working?" LMFAO, I can't tell you how hard I laughed at this. I loved your review. We aren't haters or hating on actors, we're just mature viewers who EXPECT something more, especially after seeing so many wonderful k-dramas this year. Also, have you seen Run On? The ML is an extremely dimwitted character that shows lack of social development in so many scenes. One person said he might be autistic, which bothered me as my brother is, but then I remembered that the character did a complete 180 when he was with the house maid, even hugging her. So I'm pretty sure he wasn't. So that bothered me even more. I actually don't mind cringe, I've gotten used to it and I can tolerate it to some extent. There's a huge audience there for that, and it's how it is. My biggest annoyance though, is characters who purposely dumb. I can understand nerds or intelligent people who provide comedic relief and just general funny supporting casts. But when they make them THIS DUMB I feel like they are making fun of people who have real life disorders or health issues that are beyond their control. So why make characters like this? It makes no sense to me. Anyhow, I would love to see if you've seen that show and thank you for such a great review.
Dropped at ten, but breezed through the final episodes and FINALLY finished reading this review. Honestly, it's the only review you need to read. A pretty face cannot be the only thing that keeps a show afloat. 9.1 rating my ass. Thank you so much for clearly putting into words what many of us were frustrated with. I thought I was going nuts over how illogical the FL lead was. Honestly, nothing more needs to be said, this drama was a missed opportunity. As a deaf and disabled person, I expected more. A quick one episode trope is just pure insulting. But the show will go on in popularity, purely for the rabid fanbase ogling over the ML's looks. Sigh.
So many reviews praised ML's acting. It seems like the character had asperger's; he never looked at the person…
Talked? He barely spoke until he was seen being his happy self with the house maid. No case of autism or a dim-witted character. It's crazy i had to scroll this far down before someone mentioned how weird the ML's acting was. I feel bad now cause my brother has autism, but I do not believe this actor's character was. He was just badly written, with little emotion and seemed to suffer from lack of social development. It's still the worse anime I've ever seen. I'm watching Lovely Runner and the FL is literally the ML from this.
I'm on episode 6 and I can't for the life of me understand why this drama is popular. The ML is red hot right now, mainly his looks, and that's about all I'm getting from this drama. FL is badly cast. Not cute, developed, and she looks much older than every other lead/support. It's weird. I'm gonna finish it while speeding along, but I only read half of this review and agree 100%.
I have to agree wholeheartedly. I was excited when it was the same writer from Bon-soon, but holy cow. By the second episode it dives into a comedy cartoon, and I am not kidding. It's sad the FL is incredibly cute, and I can tell she's a talented actress. I really didn't feel any chemistry between the leads though. I'm going to finish it but only while speeding through. Otherwise, such a disappointment.
Such a great review, personally the only one you need. Most other reviews are only commenting on the chemistry (mainly the attractiveness of the leads) rather than the story or the structure of the show itself. It's cringe in so many episodes, but that's typical of C-drama love stories. They REALLY do go from one plot to another with no logical segue. It's ridiculous. But for what it's worth, the leads really try to do their best with what they have, and it works for the most part. The secondary workers at the office are incredibly annoying and their lines seem like autobot, literally reading random lines from another random rom-com lol. So little makes sense, but if you really love good-looking couples acting lovey-dovey for a minute or two each episode, you might enjoy this.
what are you talking about there is no rapist in the drama and you are talking about a coutry that has more strick…
Did you watch the show? Here's another reviewer explaining.
"Here's my take on why it's rape. He had abused the power he had over her, she was a reserved, conventional, shy secretary and he was her senior at work and her boss' bestfriend/family. He used that power to pressure her into going somewhere with him (for a drink?). From my memory it was very obvious from her body language that she did not consent. According to the social rules in a conventional society, especially with women. They are not allowed to say no to their superiors and they take the blame when their superiors sexually harass them. It's lose lose. He should have (according to the conventional rules) understood that she was not a woman that would have casual sex, she also didn't have the ability (because she was both shy and lower in power to him) to say no. That's why she was coerced and it was rape. She blamed herself because that's what women in conventional societies (and let's face it even in most societies) are brought up to do. Don't fight but if you get raped its your fault."
