Article Strong Versus Weak Female Character
To an extent, it is Korean dramas but you can definitely find it in Chinese dramas and Japanese dramas as well.
But in Chinese and Japanese dramas this is not a rule, so it is good to have some dramas that represent weak people because they exist and it is good that they feel represented and see dramas where a weak person can become stronger, get there or be happy. Not every person feels represented by strong characters. Many Korean dramas also portray men with various weaknesses such as lack of maturity, materialism, ignorance, excessive shyness, wrong values, lack of education, difficulty in socializing, lack of communication and pride. But we do not talk about this because just like you said the drama audience is predominantly female and we tend to think things through our side. I myself do not see drama without romance, because work problems, with friendships and family, are already part of my day to day, in entertainment I often just want to rest my head and see something really sweet. When I want to think I see a political epic that is very far from my modern reality. In my country we have many problems to worry about and problematize, so dramas for me are more a relaxation, a fairy tale. I think dramas, nowadays, have for all tastes, it's just a matter of looking even if it's outside the Korean dramas.
