He has indeed never killed 3000 people, nor have I claimed he has. However, according to the characters, including…
"an additional intent of the scenes was to minimize any possible "killing" Wei Ying has done in the eye of the watcher, as a means of creating doubt and making him appear, for lack of a better word, "better", which the show has certainly strived to do compared to the book (which I love)."
That is what I was thinking while I read your article, that maybe it was done because they had to make him morally "better" a la censorship. But at the same time, it still bothered me all way through watching the show how very few people there were in so many scenes that should have contained a lot more than that. But like you said, I did love the show anyway and, not being in cinema business, was able to overlook it fairly easily.
As Walt Disney always preached, the foundation of any great film is the story. Without that, no amount of pretty visuals or fancy production will hold up. But with it, even in a production that is rough around the edges it can still be fantastic because of the quality of the story.
You know it's a great story when it holds up as a masterpiece even when the specific scenes of the main plot point, the romance, are all taken out. And this is because of the story it's based on, with the amazing acting and a great creative team bringing that to life with every ounce of fidelity to the source material that they could legally do.
It is a great point that this highlights the deeper aspects of Wangxian's relationship, as well as those of the other characters. Now when you go back to the original story this is based on, there's just that much more to enjoy in what is already an amazing story.
And this is not even my favorite book in the danmei genrre; that is Heaven Official's Blessing (which is my favorite book, period). Maybe one day Eternal Faith will see the light of day.
