The Halley Ban on Korean entertainment was never “lifted”. It has eased a little on Korean products but the Chinese government isn’t going to allow Korean entertainment into its country anytime soon. This also ties into the increase in animosity amongst Chinese netizens against anyone and anything that is not Chinese. So this drama will probably never air even before the the Zheng Shuang scandal. The scandal was basically the nail in the coffin for this drama.
The problem with Shuang is that her reputation is completely in ruins. A lot of Chinese celebrities sell on the fantasy of being “pure”. This isn’t like the US where personal life and work is very much separate. On the contrary, the government and audience almost base the celebrities worth on their “purity” and “unproblematic” behaviours. Shuang had several controversies before this incident and her good public image has already been decreasing almost every year. It’s just that the government never stepped in. So when the government deems someone as problematic, it’s over for them. Anything related to them whether it’s their projects, business..etc will be banned.

Also another recording was just leaked today. In it Shuang was talking about how giving the children away was a “good thing” and. She told her ex bf/husbands parents that they could just have more children later. “ don’t worry about it, if, later we still had feelings, then we can just have more children...”

For all the people that are confused. Basically Zheng Shuang and her boyfriend went to the US in 2019 to get secretly married and they secretly had two surrogate children. These two publicly broke up in late 2019 and the whole break up was very messy. Everything was revealed a few days ago due to a post of the ex bf. Someone leaked the birth certificates of the two children and netizens found that they were currently in a divorce lawsuit in the US. A recording was leaked of Zheng Shuang, her husband, and both of their parents arguing over the children. Zheng Shuang was caught saying “ why can’t we just get an abortion. So f*** annoying.” Zheng Shuang’s dad was caught saying along the lines of “Let’s just put the child up for abortion...” (note the surrogate was 7 months pregnant at that time) there are a lot more but that’s the gist of it. The ex bf/husband is in the US currently to take care of the children because Shuang refused to sign the documents to let the children go back to China. Zheng Shuang has come out and admitted to everything but her stance was that she didn’t sign the documents to let her children go back was because she didn’t want the children to be in the midst of the pandemic...(currently the pandemic threat in China is way lower and the situation is way better than that of the US).
The netizens and everyone is pissed because:
1. Surrogacy is illegal in China and not well accepted there.
2. Blatant ignorance and disregard on the two children’s lives.
3. The shock of the secret marriage.
Many companies such as Prada has publicly announced the termination of her contract and some of her dramas had been blocked. Also Chinese government sponsored news organization wrote an article condemning her actions,. Which have many speculating that Shuang could be banned from the entertainment and tv industry for good.

Umm...I don’t think it’s that simple. XZ has a movie with yuehua artist, Meng Meiqi and an upcoming drama with Yuehua artist, Wu xuanyi. Them smearing XZ won’t have any benefits for them. Plus the fact that right now they are under fire with the Chinese government for being anti-China. It’s a lose-lose situation.

I think there’s probably going to be some big changes in this adaptation. Since the two leads have an adoptive father and son relationship. Plus the fact it has a steampunk background. I wonder how they are going to adapt this to pass the censorship?

I won’t call the government as ‘supportive’. Anyone getting called out by a government sponsored news agency in China is definitely not on the governments good side. Yuehua trying to ruin XZ is just a rumour with no concrete evidence. I mean the waters are deep in the entertainment industry, celebrities are targeting each other left and right, no one really knows who is trying to sabotage who. XZ is honestly just unlucky. The drama struggling to air is a complicated problem and we, the viewers, will probably never know the real answer.

Finally, a on screen couple that I would actually like. The director is pretty reliable and the synopsis is interesting. The younger guy x older women pairing is popular these days in Cdramaland. Saying Yangmi is too old so she won’t have any chemistry with Xukai is just complete BS, not to mention rude. Xukai had great chemistry with Sandrine Pinna who is around the same age as Yangmi. Plus there are numerous outstanding dramas/movies where the leading actors have age gaps.

Xukai’s acting improved a lot since Yanxi. Very impressive.

I disagree. I believe that it is better for actors to be versatile wether it’s in their roles or with their onscreen partner. In fact I want to see them act with different actors/actresses because they need to get out of their comfort zones and it gives the audience a fresh new perspective.
Xukai and Bailu are both young and relatively new actors to the industry. And being so ‘fresh’ really requires them to challenge themselves and explore. Since they don’t have a set role or type of genre they are known for they can do and act in any drama/movie they want. This is how they are able to further their careers and opportunities. Being constantly paired together at the start of their career does not help them become better actors and certainly does not help them get better roles. Because then, as mentioned, fans and viewers will get used to them acting together and can’t see them with other actors/actresses. Adding on to the fact that some cp fans can’t separate the difference between dramaland and reality, none of this is helpful to Xukai or Bailu. Maybe in a few years, after their careers have stabilized, they could act in another drama but not right now.

This drama is probably the one that I had the least expectations for out of all of Xukais dramas. After watching a few episodes I’m not disappointed.
1. The plot is simple and lighthearted. There are plot holes and the CGI is bad but that’s pretty common in C dramas. I’m basically numb to bad cgi at this point. So far the pacing is good, not too fast or too slow. I think it’s going to take a heavy turn from the trailer but if it doesn’t I’m fine with it being the same as it is.
2. The style choices in this drama is a bit questionable. Both the FL and ML hairstyle is quite ugly. Honestly I’m surprised that Xukai can look good in such a terrible hairstyle. Wuijiayis bangs are also not that eye pleasing. The costumes I found are a bit hit or miss. Some were decent, others not so much.
3. Secondary characters are ok. They don’t have too much fillers which is always a good thing.
4. Xukai’s acting is very natural and he’s surprisingly really good at comedy. I’m actually glad he has another comedic role again since I really enjoyed it in AMA and lingjian mountain. This is probably the last outright comedic role he has since his other upcoming drama roles are all quite serious. Wujiayi is also pretty good at portraying her character. I really liked her acting in AMA.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a deep or serious wuxia drama this is definitely not it but of you’re looking for a cute, simple filler drama you can give this a try.

I think it would be similar to the Joy of Life with the comedy sprinkled in the first few episodes and die out near the end.

This was the typical wuxia romance drama with lots of misunderstandings and plot holes. The FL was a bit annoying and ML lacks communication skills.

This drama Is your average wuxia drama with mediocre plot and acting. Nothing really outstanding. The plot gets pretty boring in the latter half of the drama. I’m not going to go too hard on Chen xiao since this is her first drama and she was an idol who never had any professional training. But it was obvious that she didn’t have acting skills. Arthur Chen was definitely fine in Ever Night not outstanding but watchable. I don’t know what happened here but his acting was not good and cringe worthy at times. His body language and facial expressions always seemed very stiff and unnatural. It seemed like he was just simply ‘acting’ and had not become the character.

I hope the acting in the drama is better than the acting in the trailer. Im a bit disappointed. Song weilongs acting was ok in find yourself. Jjys acting is quite bland. I don’t know about bwj since I have never seen his dramas before.

Out of all of Xukais dramas I am most excited about this one .

No offence, but Yu Zheng is known to be unreliable and untrustworthy. Any one who has researched or has known about him for years knows that he is a liar and likes to ruin people’s careers for clout.
Honestly, when he announced that these two were the main leads, I knew that he was just riding on the Bailu and Xukai cp popularity and using them as a promotion tool. He tried to do the same thing with Zhao Liying and Chen Xiao years ago. And with him being in this industry for so long, he knows the consequences of favouring the opinions of CP fans over solos fans.
