Yes this is based on the original novel while the kdrama had to change it up abit.

No, pretty sure his character doesn't exist in the korean version coz they changed the storyline a bit and it's only based on the first book, so they probably cut his character off due to the fact they didn't adapt all 4 of the books, while this one is based on all 4. But I haven't watched it so I can't say for sure if he exists in the korean version since he only appears a few times in book 1.
