Right now I’m struggling thro Flourished Peony, which has the same problem. His mean teasing and extortion of a woman who is trying so hard just to survive in a culture & historic time that is trying to do everything it can to keep her down, is hard to watch. On the other hand, he clearly believes in her competence & has an increasing crush on her. The teasing to me feels like the old “boys will chase you & pull your braid & be mean to you if they like you” trope, which we understand now is about the boy knowing he can get away with treating someone badly. But dramaland, what would you do without these tropes? Where would the dramatic tension be? 😉

Agree on wanting dialog. Sometimes with dramas, it just depends on what kind of day or week you're having. Also, I feel as tho' I've seen a slew of dramas lately using the abusive/emotionally stunted man trope and I'm burned out. From your recommendation, I'll try it again after a while--and will put the others on my list!

There are always reasons, which are then used as excuses. Are there any good reasons for being abusive, or does each person have a choice of how they treat other people? I’ve known people from very difficult backgrounds who use that experience to be kind to people around them instead of continuing to pass down the suffering. Now this is a drama, and so I guess the writers think that wouldn’t be as engaging. But I’m going to look for a drama with more good people in it. At another time, maybe I could tolerate watching this, but I’m reading the U.S. news every day which is super stressful, and I just don’t have the stamina for this now. Thank you for your explanation and patience, tho! ❤️

Yes, I’ve seen so many dramas set up this way. The trick to writing them well is to create a few likeable and engaging characters that keep you hanging on thro the abusive part of the storyline. For me, this drama didn’t do that. And I still find the trope of abusive-man-becomes-better-after-knowing-a-kind-woman to be old, and a bit disturbing. But that’s just my opinion.
