John Master’s review highlights so many things I did not mention and I recommend reading his comprehensive commentary above, in addition to my ramblings below!
I took a gamble to watch and it paid off in an emotional winning hand for me. I consider myself a fluffernutter… one who enjoys fluffyBL’s with some conflict that is presented for which the two main heroes must overcome to create their own happy ending!
I set aside what I would consider a gallant film student’s final project before graduation and watched as the story unfolded with an open mind and found myself with an open heart at the end! I love it!
I feel that what it lacks in posh and professionalism, it provides you an opportunity to overlook the lack of technical skills, professional cinematography, editing team and most importantly the budget to make a longer movie which could fill in the choppy transitions and story gaps to just connect with characters that are so likable that you root for them and their happy ending!
I just went with the story and emotionally it checked off the boxes of a good characters, decent acting, overcoming interference from “Emma”, resolving misunderstandings, discussing romantic feelings and Lucas’s father homophobia to deliver a solid story with a happy ending. The most amazing aspect to this movie is it accomplished all of this under 30 minutes! I feel that is quite an impressive accomplishment!
I am very thankful that the BL troupe evil girl coming in between Ben and Lucas was resolved rather quickly! I believe she is the one who contacted the father with pictures of Ben and Lucas to cause trouble. I’m leaning towards that assumption because in her last scene 🎬 , her face was very “we’ll see about this”! This could be a misnomer, but it makes sense with how did the father receive and react pictures of the guys!
I do agree the breakup could have been done much better than with a text message and phone block . However since I despised the desperation route she took to get rid of her competition, (paying someone to beat him up), I figure I could just let that injustice go.
As I have been reflecting on this movie 🎦 today, it feels very autobiographical and personal. I don’t necessarily think the violence aspect is something that happened but the rest felt very authentic and genuine especially for two high school friends who met in 9th grade. I could see why both didn’t disclose their feelings for fear of losing the other.
I can relate to feeling like a third wheel 🛞 and would go out of my way to support my friend and their perceived happiness by getting out of the way.
The perfect date day would definitely involve traipsing around mall doing so those types of things. I do not think that is just a Thai teenage custom either. I still see teenagers roaming the mall and food court on what is obviously a date here in our Western culture.
Music is always something I tune my ear to. I enjoyed Zee and Lucy Thomas’s rendition of “Million Dreams”!
My take on this song used during the wedding reception was it the only way the scriptwriter could reveal the true intention of the film.
I feel the lyrics symbolize these two young men’s journey in coming out, acknowledging their feelings for one another, dreams that they have and the world they will make for themselves!
🎼 Million Dreams 🎶
“I close my eyes and I can see The world that's waiting up for me That I call my own Through the dark, through the door Through where no one's been before But it feels like home”
The last 🎬 scene is the movie 🎥 the door 🚪is open and you see a family not only accepting but embracing the , his boyfriend while the moon looks on and smiles!
Big win for Our Team!
The lyrics go on to say while Lucas and Ben are enjoying their “perfect day” at the mall….
“However big, however small Let me be part of it all Share your dreams with me You may be right, you may be wrong But say that you'll bring me along To the world you see
I think of what the world could be A vision of the one I see A million dreams is all it's gonna take A million dreams for the world we're gonna make”
The last line embodies the quest of these two individuals…
“For the world we're gonna make”
I highly recommend watching this movie with not only an open mind but an open heart!
