A sad, intense love story, beautifully dressed in a technically exceptional sageuk format, with superb cinematography,…
Political plotline do seem disjointed. I ,also, as an I viewer myself, understand that aspect well because I watched Yisan ( 2007 ) and The Throne (2015 ) before and also read some history after these.
It is reimagination of heart breaking love story between Joseon Famous King and his beloved concubine only, the actual target audience being the Koreans who know their history well.
As much as the drama is popular in South Korea and still a darling to most of us who watched it, the drama audience seem to be less than other popular dramas.
Any reason why ?
Is it because of sageuk genre ? Is it bec of ending ?
Wait… who will junho play lol sovieshu or heinry LOL… San has sovieshu vibes ngl LOL
Sorry , clicked wrong button and deleted my post.
I saw a video incidentally while searching Junho and Yoona Senorita Practice Video.
Someone really made the fanmade 'Remarried empress ' with Junho as Sovieshu in it. The video has Yoona and Lee Jong Suk ( Big mouse couple )as Empress and Heinry though.
Does Junho have that strong alpha male vibe ?
But after being elevated to Solid Male Lead , I doubt general audience want him as Sovieshu ( Someone 's second lead ).

I am not shitting on you. I am just excited to explain my take on drama and if this excitement and choice of words feel rude to you, I am sorry.
I am even ok with this drama dropping ratings on mydramalist cause it has its own defects. ( Ahem ,Fairy Palace and ignoring the whole family time in novel ) I just want it to have more viewers to discuss the drama from different points.

4. He is a King . What do you expect ?
They want to show the power disparity between Our Leads clearly, in later parts of the show , so that's it. How much they are in love, he is the man with highest authority in all of Joseon and she is a court maid ( aka government slave ).
The drama highlights whether she accepts his proposal or not, she will always be his inferior , never his equal in marriage.
That's the bitter, yet undeniable truth for 18th Century Joseon
The drama is not afraid to dive into the dark side of the Palace , especially at those times. It's not definitely a puppy sageuk like Moonlight or the King's Affection.

I really am bored to type , but I have literally fallen in love with this drama. So I want to spread the love to other viewers and Here I am.
1. The Show doesn't have time to solve the disappearing girl cases ; it isn't Sherlock type show by the way.
The Scene wanted to show that San, as a Crown Prince Really cared about His People even though solving the case was disadvantageous for him . ( Cause his grandfather would be angry at him again for crossing the boundary of authority ).
It also showed Hong Doek Ro was greedy , thinking only about his position and didn't know the true heart of San. He worked for the Prince , calculating what would be advantageous or not , because his position would rise with San's reign. He didn't want to work for the good of Joseon , which San knew and so San couldn't think of Deok Ro as his Loyal Man because of that.

Well ,it did happen to me too. Depends on your mood while watching the series . For example , while Dali and Cocky prince aired , most were raving about the couple chemistry, but I just couldn't feel it.
I liked how they portrayed the complex feelings n pain of court ladies .The genre was romance but I dint feel…

Though I know everyone has their own personal perception of romance , you are the first one here( after I have joined this thread ) to tell this couple doesn't have much romantic chemistry. I found it interesting.

May I suggest to read the discussion about drama at talking cupboard after you have finished the drama? It is a smooth explanation of the drama as a whole and a lot of insights were put into that review.

Thanks for regarding me well.
Personally , I feel sad only with seeing the title ' Red Sleeve '.
By 18th century Joseon patriach rules, DeokIm was already the King 's woman since she started wearing that particular Red Sleeves ,bound to her master for her whole life.
Some will think this is a simple Cindrella story. But it's not. It's a mournful romance about being a woman in that era.
Deok Im ,a free spirited clever woman, had met and took interest in a man who turned out to be the future King of Joseon unexpectedly.
Later seeing the dangerous situations he was in , she couldn't stand by and help him because of mixed emotion bag she had ( Loyality and may be , some love ). Well she needed to be loyal to him ,cause he was her master and she would be kicked out of the palace when he die and she had nowhere to go outside the palace, considering palace was the place she grew up. .
While helping him, she got tangled up in his journey and also ( should I say ,unfortunately ) his love for her.
************ In my opinion, San kind of low key forced His Love upon her ( well he grew up privileged and he was already the King at that point ,not the powerless heir he once was ) . Considering he wasn't willing to hear the answer 'No ' for his proposal and one proposal after another in spite of her initial rejection.
It has been Jan 25 in Korea though.

But JLML 718 said as much as Yeonjo ( San's grandpa ) read and enjoyed the folktales , Jeongjo (San) hated it . He was more into classic writing .
Not the angst one. 😉😉

I knew the fact from his interview.
But he is from Grand Prince ( one of 3rd King Taejong 's sons ) bloodline so even if he is related to Yi San , it will be like 100th Cousin removed.
He is regarded as the Last King of Joseon who could bring Joseon to Greatness.
Why was the viewership rating so high for this drama,?
Because Lee Junho can portray and bring greatness of Jeongjo to onscreen well.
Koreans Just love this King,Jeongjo for his achievements.

He is famous for that in history.
Even Jeongjo himself punished Hong Deok Ro only when he couldn't allow Deok Ro to do as he pleased anymore.
But as a greedy and ambitious man as Deok Ro was, I think stripping of his position was enough punishment for him.
The King had to save Deok Ro's face, regarding his achievements during their past comaradship.
