K-Drama A case of when you should leave well enough alone
I was curious how Japan's adaptation of the treasured (at least, to me) Your Sky would fare, so I kind of couldn't help watching this.
I will say that the chemistry wasn't bad, and the overall atmosphere was bright like summer but . . .
Yeah . . . This was a pointless nothing-burger of an adaptation if I've ever seen one!
It wasn't horrendous, per se; the actors were clearly putting in effort, and they generally didn't radically change things to the story's detriment, but you could feel how ill-suited an adorable, slow-burn style romance like this was for J-BL's usual format of 8-10 twenty-thirty minute episodes compared to the original's 12 nearly one-hour-long episodes. To say nothing of the side couple's romance, because I could not for the life of me bring myself to care. They had no real tension. It almost felt like they were relying on viewers having seen the original Thai drama, so they could do a little wink-and-nod for the camera at having included them.
Even the little animated intros for each character, which served to speed-run their personality/relevance, charming as they were, only made me wish we could have just gotten to know them ourselves through their actions rather than be told about them.
Speaking of speed-running, my word was the final big conflict wrapped up quickly and easily! I wasn't particularly a fan of it in the original drama already since, for me, it didn't fit the low-stakes, sugary-sweet, hopeful tone set, but at least there I could appreciate the time and effort of the characters speaking for themselves to resolve the issue, rather than the sudden, out-of-nowhere turnaround here.
Also, with the lack of time, I missed the quiet sensitivity and intimacy from the original Your Sky. How much the characters carefully considered their feelings and each other.
This . . . This won't linger in my heart.
