I was so pissed. I am dropping the drama. Imagine the sound track. Mtcheeeew. I am 29 the last time I listened…
Yeah lion king contains a lot of East African culture especially Tanzania and Kenya and also the movie contains swahili which is spoken in those two countries. I doubt you’ll ever find west/North Africans jamming that music 😂😂🤣
It seems like some people in these comments don’t understand why others are upset about this drama. I also know that someone is gonna look at this long comment and think to themselves, “wow, it’s really not that serious!!” but let me explain to you why IT IS that serious. No one is saying the show is trash and no one is trying to slander your precious Korea. As you already know, most people are rather outraged about the way they portrayed Africa in the first episode and if you’re not African then don’t call others sensitive for stating their opinions and raising complaints.
Yes, the writer was ignorant and here’s why: No one is saying it’s bad to volunteer and help bring water and other utilities to some parts of Africa where people are struggling but the fact that they just said “Africa” without specifying which country he was in is one of the biggest issues. They generalized Africa. They made Africa a monolith country. It’s like saying “I sent food to the starving children in Asia” which wouldn’t make any sense because Asia is a continent with many countries. But do you know what else is a continent??? Africa!! Yes Africa is continent, but the writer generalized us into one single, starving and poor country that is in need of a savior from above. So does it make sense that he came to “Africa” and dug a well that provided water for a whole CONTINENT?? You tell me
One other thing was the lion king music like seriously?? Africa is a continent with different cultures, languages and religions. Playing the lion king music to talk about Africa is honestly like playing Gangnam Style when you see an Asian person or when talking about Asia which wouldn’t make any sense because Asia is also a multicultural continent with different cultures, languages, religions and people. It may have not seem like a big deal but it is.
Another thing was the YELLOW FILTER. If you noticed during the African scene they put a yellow filter which, for those who don’t know, is a filter that Hollywood uses in most films when they’re in “undeveloped” countries. We’re already portrayed in a negative light by the western media and seeing Korea doing that was a blow.
So before you start calling the people who were affected by the blatant racism in the drama “sensitive”, educate yourself first and try to think from their point of view.
