Its never romantic from ML side atleast. And it's not explicitly mentioned that FL loves him romantically. She just says she loves him a lot, jealous of his wife etc

To be fair, ML completely drove her out emotionally. He doesn't seem to do lot of introspection either. As she said, he doesn't want to keep the marriage because he loves her. But she still seems to love him a lot and bear the guilt

She is not the victim of the affair in my opinion and I don't think the writers meant it that way too. She truly didn't feel any sort of guilt during the period and would have continued. Its only when reality sinks in slowly we could see she is feeling guilty. If she was not caught, she would have continued. If she was not cut off by the other guy, she would have kept meeting him, because she was still yearning to be in that dream land away from family, job and responsibilities. That's why she said she would not meet him for now. As SW wife said, she thought him as a kind of saviour.

As you said the ending is sour because even if she is crying in half the scenes she is a part of, ML still felt completely broken and it seems completely unfair for him. Even if they got back together, it should have been after few years where she truly repents and loses everything she was meant to lose by taking that decision.

Affair was not justified at all. But they try to make us understand why things ended up the way they did

Replying just to say that this is completely untrue. Why should chief can't have crush on divorcee? He never crossed the line too. And the single mom too

It definitely gets a lot better once she starts to change.
