As another middle aged woman ;) I agree. I am happy to know that not all BL fans prefer softporn dramas XD
Yep, I have had the exact same experience. Whenever I meet someone in this fandom who wants to discuss the BL phenomenon to a deeper extent it turns out to be an older person. I guess that's the nature of life -- ie, the longer we live, the more we see and understand, and our comments reflect that.

Another middle-aged BL fan here. Born in ‘82 and was trilled to see you mention one of the best BLs ever made.…
I know, it really is cool to meet others over 20 yrs old here. I often feel so old and out of place in the BL fandom. I think one difference between older people is that we are more chill about BL's and LGBT movies where bad shit happens because at our age we know that, well, this is how life is.

The younger crowd, however, flips out when a character cheats or a relationship is, as they say, "toxic." But after 50+ yrs on the planet, I know that this stuff is just real life. So I like seeing reality represented. Or, as the case is with "My Beautiful Man," I like seeing weirdos represented. Hiro is such a weirdo that I LOVE it, lol. Many complained that the relationship in that show was "toxic" whereas I simply thought of it as unique. Looks like you agree, so thanks!

Oh, and good luck teaching in S. Korea! How exciting.

Yep, just as I thought -- most are from Asia, Europe and America, with a small number from Africa and South America. But I was surprised at how many BL fans are in America, because I never meet any here. I guess it's because of my age. If I were in my teens or twenties I'd probably meet more mutual fans in real life. Alas, I am in my 50's and there are NO fujoshis in my social circles, lol.

At any rate, thank you for the link!

That's so cool that you are Latin American. I must say, I was surprised when I joined MDL and discovered how racially diverse the BL fandom was. I'd heretofore assumed it was largely comprised of Asian women (since the genre originated in Asia), with a small sprinkling of American and European women (since LGBT cinema has already been big in America and Europe for 25+ years). But I also meet a number of Black and Latino fans, which is terrific. Of course, I only know their race and nationality if/when they tell me (eg, as you just did). I see lots of statistics on age and gender, but I've never seen a formal study showing the race and nationality of BL fans -- which would be fascinating.

Wow, I guess there's more of us than I knew! Statistics show that the average age for a fujoshi is 20. I am over twice that, which is why I often feel so ancient on this site. I did find one interesting study, however, that said that the Anglo fujoshis tend to be older than the Asian ones. I am an American, so I fit the profile in that regard.

I copy/pasted a passage from that study below:

"According to a 2021 survey by Madill and Zhao, the average age of BL fans worldwide is 20 years old. Asian fans average 20 years old, while Anglo fans average 23 years old. The age range for the Asian fans is 12–37 years old, while the age range for the Anglo fans is 11–70 years old."

Can you fill me in as to why fans of this guy Build want to slime Bible? Are Build and Bible enemies in real life or something? I only know that Build was the actor who played Pete in Kinn/Porsche, but nothing else.

Frankly, I don't care for Thai BL's so I don't watch them (I like Japanese BL's), and don't know any of the stories swirling around these Thai BL actors. But there's clearly some story swirling around about this guy Bible, which is a shame. Hell, I only hung to Kinn/Porsche until the end because I got such a kick out of the character Vegas.

His English was perfect, and it cracked me up that he only switched to English to express expletives (eg, "You fucked up my whole plan" "It was fine until your dumbass came along" and "That's a load of bullshit"). His pronunciation of those slang phrases was so perfect that he sounded as if he were raised in America. So I checked to see, and discovered he'd learned English at an International School he'd attended his whole life before majoring in Mechanical Engineering in college. This guy is freaking smaaart! He's even holding Arthur C. Clarke's novel, "Childhood's End" in one scene (Clarke co-wrote the script of 2001 with Stanley Kubrick and is regarded as the most intellectual sci-fi writer there is).

At any rate, I'm interested in this guy Bible because he's clearly exceptionally intelligent. So I wanted you to fill me in.

As another middle aged professor, I could not agree more!
lol, I'm thrilled to know I am not alone, because I feel like such an old lady in this realm

If you look at my profile, you'll see that I'm an American woman and that my field is English Literature, with a concentration in Victorian Lit. I checked yours and saw that you're also American, but a man (which is rare in the BL fandom). May I ask your field? If you don't want to say publicly, you can shoot me a message.

Kohei's jealousy was quite amusing; it was clear he was uncomfortable seeing Taichi and the girl smiling together.…
I adored that when Taichi noticed Kohei was upset by something, Kohei had replied, "Your obtuseness can be so annoying" LOL.

When determining how good a BL is, I ask myself, "Would even non BL fans like this?" If the answer is yes, then it's because the show has a solid plot, directing, writing and acting. Such shows are rare because producers know they don't have to bother with any of those things when the BL fandom will consume their product regardless of quality.

So it's nice to see producers put in time, effort and planning anyway, as they did with Hidamari ga Kikoeru. It's not a formulaic show that just rolled off a BL Factory assembly-line (I'm looking at you Thailand). Nor is it a cast where the actors are here simply to regenerate careers after aging out of some Boy Band.

I gotta say, it's nice for me, a middle aged professor, to see a BL that doesn't make me embarrassed to admit I'm a fan of the genre. There are so many silly, vapid BL's designed to appeal to 13 year old girls that I'm truly embarrassed and, hence, tell very few people I watch this stuff.

But when I do come across a show that doesn't embarrass me, it's usually Japanese. My faves are My Beautiful Man, Old Fashioned Cupcake, and The Pornographer. I now can add this one, Hidamari ga Kikoeru, to the list. Incidentally, My Beautiful Man was written by an award winning novelist, and you can tell because Hira is such an original character -- a freak whom only a professional could manage to make sympathetic.

Indeed, "professional" is the word I would use to describe Hidamari ga Kikoeru as well. The writing, directing, and acting all feel highly professional and accomplished.

Title Night Flight
The best bl not even in asia but also in the world , this is my opnion on this movie and i consider it the only…
It's far too intelligent and nuanced to be included under the banner "BL" which includes so much silly nonsense. Most of these BL's seem like an excuse to give some aging boyband idol a way of regenerating his career. They are pure formulaic fluff, with many of them even worse than the American tv sitcoms that also come off a factory assembly line.

Night Flight, however, is not like a BL. It is more like an Indy LGBT film. But, hey, I'm only talking about terminology. When it comes to our love for this film, I think we 100% agree. I've seen it 3 times and recommend to anyone new to Asian LGBT films.

Licentiousness? What about sanctimony, hysteria, pearl clutching and acting a poster child Karen?
I wouldn't bother replying to this moron. They told me that when their neighbors smoke pot on the porch the 2nd hand smoke gets into their grandchildren's lungs. You see, the smoke does not disseminate in the open air as it does outdoors on the rest of the planet earth. Nope, smoke where he lives remains in a condensed stream and floats over to his house in some sort of black cloud so that their grandchildren can breath it in.

I just laughed and thought, yep, this person is an idiot. It's not worth wasting time on them. Instead, take heart in the fact the majority of comments here (about 99%) are in support of Yoo Ah In. This page is international, so I suspect that it reflects a strong pro Yoo Ah In sentiment in S. Korea as well. I just hope Yoo Ah In makes it through this period without killing himself as so many other Korean celebs do, because there is a massive fan base waiting for him to come back.

Absolutely. I'm a BL fan and this is clearly a BL but without the kissing (it's Chinese, after all). There are subtle hints, and not so subtle hints that they were in love. It's lots of fun.

Srsly? too light for not even doing harm to anyone except oneself???
Umm, exactly. South Korea is Asian and people here are arguing that the country's policies are misguided and counterproductive. A number of people have also expressed a desire for YAI to come to America because he's a talented actor and Hollywood would love to have him. It's too late for Lee Sun Kyun, but YAI still has a chance if he gets the hell out of there.

I live in a shitty country in Europe, but it still comforts me that there are worse places than this. I wish you…
If you deem anyone who disagrees with your opinion to be stupid then you won't learn anything. Part of learning is to hear all sides and then process the information to draw conclusions. I have presented arguments in a calm, rational and factually informed manner so that you can draw conclusions. That is sign of intelligence.

Incidentally, calling people "druggie" makes you sound like a fool. We don't use that word in the West as it's offensive, as well as childish. It's tantamount to making fun of people with mental illnesses and mental handicaps. Seeing you use the term "druggie" is so disgusting that, really, I cannot respond to you anymore.

Why are you comparing addiction to robbery and molestation? Robbery and molestation have victims, which is why every Western person is so against such things. Addiction, however, is a victimless crime. Sure, addiction impedes productivity at work, but that's why companies pay for a leave of absence to go to rehab and why insurance companies pay for it.

Listen, it's not just that science shows why incarcerating addicts is pointless; it's that it's our cultural mindset to show compassion toward addicts. You simply won't win this argument in a Western country because you are up against the entire culture.

Why are commenters "arrogant" when nearly all have simply cited the fact that he needs treatment, not punishment?…
Even if it's true that it's to "tick boxes" so what? The motive doesn't matter. Besides, I had stated that one motive was to get a sober, productive staff.

Also, paying for your employee's treatment speaks to how committed our culture is to helping addicts get better. Helping addicts is simply part of our cultural mindset. It runs so deep at this point that it's taboo to make fun of addicts by calling them names like "druggy scumbag" or "criminal" etc. That is why you are seeing such a strong response against YAI's punishment on this page. It's not because people are anti-South Korea, it's because our culture dictates that we show compassion toward addicts.

Well said. I've been holding my breath regarding Yoo and suicide since the absurdly overblown "investigation"/media…
I agree. Even if he didn't speak English, he could have learned quickly enough. It's too late for him, but YAI still has time to get the hell out of that country.

I started to watch Asian films 4 years ago, and assume that a country's films reflect its culture. With Korean film, I simply could not help but to notice that the characters engage in excessive drinking and bullying. The bullying is what really gets me though, since teachers in America would expel kids for bullying. Yet in Korea, the teachers seem to be part of it.

I figured atom would just google a country with the lowest addiction rate to lie and pretend he's from there.

At any rate, I am pleased to see that this guy plus 2 others are the only ones on the thread who want to see YAI go to prison. Otherwise, it's 99% comments in favor of YAI. Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised by how sincerely YAI's fans defended him on this page. I hope his management company is aware that this is the attitude toward him in the West.
