A movie is even better, cuz that means it will be monetized and, thus, they will be able to afford a 3rd show. You see, the book is a trilogy with 3 volumes.

I wrote a glorious review for it both here and on Viki. I need to post that review on Reddit's BL threads as well.

I wonder if there's any way we can ameliorate that? Look at a show like KinnPorsche that promoted itself for 3 years before airing and which continues to do so with pieces in even Western magazines such as Rolling Stone. Then, the actors themselves promote the show via social media. I wonder if we can promote it with our social media? The KinnPorsche MDL page has 120,000 comments compared to only 300 or so here. It deserves more attention!

It's nice that people volunteer. The problem, however, is that while we pay for Viki, sometimes a free site like Youtube or BLparadise gets the show with subtitles first. For example, they took forever with Kissable Lips. I wrote to their customer services and complained about how they need to pay subbers so that they cannot continue to use the excuse that we must wait because the subbers are volunteers.

There are only 300 viewer/ratings for this on Viki, compared to 80,000 for Semantic Error and other hit shows. It's crazy that more people are not watching it. Is the problem that it's not being promoted? I worry that when a show does not get viewers, then it means it won't get a sequel.

Hyper literal translations of East Asian languages especially drive me nuts when it comes to the word "like" which East Asians use in the same context that we use "love." A proper translation would consider the context and hence write "love" in the subtitles. Instead, we'll see a mad, passionate declaration of love with the contrastingly tepid subtitle of "I like you." We saw it in Addicted where Gu Ha is so insanely in love that he frigging kidnaps Bai Lu Yin, and yet there he is shouting, "I like you." Huh? Waddya mean "like"? That dudes in LOVE!!!

Omg, the porn ads on "MyReadingManga" are insane. The fact that it's all cartoon porn makes it even weirder. I just got used to it and ignore it by now.

Also, how nice to see you here Ximmich! Looks like you and I have the same taste cuz we also both loved "My Beautiful Man." We got it bad for Japanese BLs with a unique sensibility. I like KinnPorsche, but it's also not especially grown up. It's got pretty obvious plot lines, virtually every character is gay, and they are all so young. It often feels like a bunch of high school kids pretending to be mafia.

Now, "My Beautiful Man" may have featured high school boys, but the themes on obsession (Hira) and poor communication and facades (Kiyoi) were very mature and complex. Likewise, "Cupcake" has a mature, complex theme about how, "Regret can lead to happiness and fuel a life" (Togawa and Nozue each say that same line at different points in the show). It's a powerful theme about making a change in middle age to turn around regret. As a woman over 50, this show speaks to me. The show is now in my Top 3, along with "My Beautiful Man" and "Blueming."

I LOVE how they say, "eh?" in Japan! I thought I was the only one. It's how we say "huh?" Also, it pisses me off that Viki charges and then refuses to pay its subbers. But the subs are far better than Gagaoolala, which are often quite bad.

It was crazy that "Mr Unlucky Has No Choice But to Kiss" has "kiss" in the title, yet it did not have a kiss at the end. "Cupcake" however will not disappoint. As you said, it has a very adult sensibility. I wrote a review for it in this review section where I described it as being cute, but also having a complex theme. It strikes a balance between cute and complex, which is very difficult to do.

Exactly. My Beautiful Man and The Pornographer were also very short (ie, 6 episodes of 24 minutes each). But they were so good I wanted more! And we got more with The Pornographer, because it had 2 sequels. It did not have an enormous fan base (not like, say, Semantic Error), but the fans that it did have were rabid. Likewise, the fans of My Beautiful Man, which also has a sequel coming next year. It's based on the 2nd novel, where Kiyoi is working as a model and Hira is a photographer. I can't wait to see how those 2 get along now that they are a couple.

He definitely looks different. A girl higher up in this thread explained that he had covid and lost a lot of weight. That would explain why he appears more angular and refined in the face. Also, people lose fat in the face as they age. It's why women are silly to starve themselves to lose weight after 40. Then they go and get surgical fat injections to put it right back into their faces, lol. So he may just look this different cuz of weight loss, plus his hair is lighter and styled differently.

I have no problem with plastic surgery either. Hell, I've even had it myself. I guess if he didn't have a nose job, then he looks different cuz of the weight loss, and different hair color and hairstyle. Incidentally, other girls didn't say he had a nose job; they just said he looked different. I did not know about the covid. I guess that's why.

I did notice he was thinner. But don't you think there's something else? If you scroll down through this thread you'll see that a couple of other people were also trying to figure out why he looks so different. To be clear, I think he looks better. In fact, the other girls were also saying he looks hotter this season. They just couldn't figure out why.

I thought for sure his declared envy of girls would generate jokes about Tops & Bottoms, lol. Oh, and I know some take issue with associating Bottoms with women, but it's really just about how women's bodies are typically penetrated during sexual intercourse (ie, just like Bottoms). As such, I don't find the association offensive. It's only offensive if you stereotype Bottoms as a swishy and effeminate.

I was going nuts trying to figure out why Son Woo Hyun (aka, Seo Joon in the show), looks so different this season, and I finally got it. Here it is: a nose job. If you compare his nose from Seasons 1 and 2 you'll see that it's now more narrow at the tip and has a more sculpted, refined look. Now, I could be wrong, but let's consider that Korea is #1 on the planet for the most plastic surgeries, and that plastic surgery is de rigueur for celebrities. Waddya think? Nose job or not?

I think Togawa decided to go for it after 7 years for 2 reasons. One, he overheard Nozue on the phone turning down a promotion yet again, and he's concerned that Nozue is stifling his very own potential and, hence, his own happiness. Two, Nozue gave him an in when he talked about envying girls, and even asked Togawa that same day if he knew good places for deserts (because he'd seen that pancake commercial that morning). Togawa sees this as the perfect opportunity to take Nozue to a girly cafe for dessert. Basically, Nozue handed him the perfect setup to get him on a date.

Yep, I was disappointed by 3 Japanese BL's for avoiding a kissing scene. There was no excuse for not kissing in Cherry Magic cuz those men were 30 and over. They could almost get away with it in that one about the high school kids with the eraser, cuz being gay was so new to both boys and they were only in high school.

But I did not think they could get away with it in "Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice But to Kiss." I mean, what kiss? The lucky guy gave a quick, closed mouth peck in episode 1 and after that, the unlucky guy was running away from a kiss. They ended it with them tickling each other. Sorry, but these are horny guys in college who don't live their parents. They would be getting it on! At least have them sharing a proper kiss. We see is a proper kiss in every hetero romance, don't we? So why not a gay romance?
