how long will a historical drama got license
Obtaining a distribution license (the "Online Label" or "Dragon Label") for a historical or costume drama in China typically takes 5 to 8 months from the time the raw footage is submitted. However, complex productions or script issues can push this review and censorship process up to a year or more.

The Review Process Acquiring the distribution license via the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) involves two main hurdles:

Content review (Censorship): Historical dramas are heavily scrutinized for ideological compliance, distortion of historical figures, and adherence to specific genre quotas. This review period usually takes 1 to 2 months to yield initial feedback, but complex files can push co-reviews to a maximum of 50 days.

Distribution approval: Once script and visual cuts are approved, the NRTA grants the official distribution permit. This allows the production to affix the official government label the (Wangbiao) or (Longbiao) on the broadcast.

Recent policy changes regulations regarding the licensing and broadcasting of Chinese historical dramas (such as the Broadcasting 21 Measures) have been updated:

Review while broadcasting: Producers can now apply for pilot programs allowing their historical series to undergo review while currently broadcasting, dramatically improving time-to-market for episodes.

Looser Quotas: Quota restrictions limiting historical and costume dramas on television channels have been significantly lifted.

The difference between licensing and airing even after securing a distribution license, a historical drama is not guaranteed to air immediately. The production may sit in post-production hell (CGI, dubbing & soundtrack) or be deliberately shelved to wait for a lucrative release window where the cast or competing dramas do not conflict.
