Thanks for this list...I am always interested in seeing how different dramas that I like are seen by others. Did…
I must admit I am one of those who hasn't watched the shows you've mentioned - but yes I enjoyed watching him in Goblin so should definitely get them on my list. Coffee Prince was one that I had down to watch at some point but there's this never ending tide of new dramas coming in all the time and there's (even for me) only so many hours in the day hah :)

What about all the great chinese, japanese and thai series? I feel they are very under appricated.
At the moment, for me anyway, I'm only watching SK drama's purely because it's taken me a while to start to understand the culture and language and as a result i'm enjoying them so much more. At some point I definitely want to start looking at other countries dramas though.

From a stats perspective - SK has by far the most data on this site so you can do more with it, but yes, once I start doing more processing of it my goal would certainly be to look at the other countries on their own merits and also see how the different countries perform, what is more popular in each area and so forth, I think that'll be really interesting and might encourage more people to try and step outside of their comfort zone (me included :) )

I must admit I am now naturally cautious of anything on Netflix which is less than 16 x 1 hour episodes and will immediately assume they've westernised it and either split it up to two seasons, or done some other junk to it.

I hope that the likes of Netflix don't change things too much - change is good, but let's change what needs changing and not erode what are actually some of the greatest points of KDrama :)

I think Vagabond is actually the only total fail in my book. Love Alarm and Hospital Playlist got their Season 2's and the latter didn't *really* need it but is all the better for it.

Watched all the top 10 and honestly agree with most of it. Can't believe Boys Over Flowers is on this list along…
Her Private Life is down at position 43 currently, and with a rank around 300-400 it's probably not going to be moving very rapidly anywhere. Shame, I agree, its a really good story - Park Min Young rarely misses :)

CLOY absolutely will make it on to the top ten though, of that I'm 100% confident :)

Flower of Evil was so good - I love it when a drama plays with your prejudices and holds up a mirror so you can see them staring back at you, this one was really good :)

Yes While you were sleeping and Her private life were both great - my daughter watches While you were sleeping on repeat she likes it so much i think hah :)

Cho Na did an amazing job picking out the images for sure!

I checked earlier, and where It's Okay was in position 17 before, it's in position 15 now right behind Crash Landing... though there's a heck of a gap to get above position 14 now so things are going to stay that way for a while I think before we see them go up the next rungs of the ladder :)

Looking back on DOTS. Really wasn’t that good. Most people prob enjoyed it because of song joongki.
Song Joong-Ki was probably a big draw for sure and you'll find most of the top ten are probably significantly helped there because of a popular main cast member or two. For me, I think the biggest aspect of this that I really enjoyed was that it was one of the very few military dramas, and it did so in a peacekeeping setting even. I enjoyed the relationship between the two main leads as well as some of the secondary characters and how they developed too.

Only one, maybe, of two of the overall top 10 would be in my personal top anything and one of them - You Who Came…
The cast are almost the entirety of a reason that i'll watch a drama to be honest. I've seen most of the ones you call out there and agree - some really good dramas in that list and absolutely nothing weird there in the slightest. I think Are you Human Too might actually have been my first KDrama that I sat and watched with my mum a bit before I actually started watching it endlessly (ahem).

We're all wired differently and one of the things I love about KDrama is that there's so much variety that there's going to be something out there for all of us to enjoy :)

Thanks for the comment ! :)

W is my favourite and one of the first dramas I watched. Happy to see it's popular.
I think it was one of the first dramas I watched too - partly because my daughter said she gave up half way through because she couldn't keep up with it and lost what was going on - though I suspect that was more to do with her doing 15 things at once rather than paying attention to one but... :-)

Also possibly unpopular opinion, the quality of dramas overall has gotten better over the past decade or so...…
I think changes in modern dramas are a double edged sword. The quality of dramas is immeasurably better both in their production and their writing and that's clearly going to make for a much more memorable and enjoyable drama. on the other hand, there's a lot more of them coming out all the time fighting for that attention from views as well - so while on the one hand the "whats airing now" chart gives you a good idea of the wow-factor - which could be down to cast, effects or anything in addition to being actually good - unless it is actually something that has that longevity it's not going to keep those viewer numbers up.

I think what's needed are some articles that help bring some of these hidden gems to light because they become difficult for the newcomers to find in the first place, particularly if (as they often are) they have a less well known cast.

Shows like Signal, Mouse etc will continue to grow, slowly but consistently in numbers I think - though with Lee Seung Gi in the cast, I would hope that Mouse attracts more viewers more rapidly given he's quite busy and I know I often hunt out other dramas by finding actors I enjoy and seeing what else they've done.

yup. more thriller and crime series and less of the annoying ML, hell yassssss!
I like a nice variety, medical, legal, crime, psychological, romance, scifi, keeps it fresh. Just had a bit of a spate on crime series, looks like i'm going back down the romance path again at the moment :)

I do look forward to more varied shows with deeper plotlines - while the romcom's generally are fairly cookie-cutter, you then get shows like Mouse which wipe the slate clean.

Only watched Goblin from that list. Loved that show. All the other.....seem generic and uninteresting as hell.…
My Mister and Mouse i've seen and were both incredible. Not seen the others though so... watch list here I come :-P

As an old guy too, I'll say hello. I can comment about W. It used to be in 5th place. I don't know how it got…
I think there are a number of factors.

Lee Jong Suk completed military service, and then announced his next project - both of which are going to make poeple look him up and watch his previous work.

Han Hyo Joo is a rare casting on dramas as I think she focuses more on movies - but she just announced two dramas including "Happiness" - so again I think people are going to look up her previous dramas and W is one of her most recent main-castings.

The most-popular is purely based on watchers, it doesn't factor in whether or not those watchers actually rated it highly or how they rated it compared to their other favourites for example. A chart which weighted watcher counts based on review scores would be interesting - so a 8.9 might be higher up the charts than a 9.5 if the 8.9 is based on 1000 reviewers whereas the 9.5 is based on 10.

I think that naturally you get a boost in the watcher numbers the moment you get on the top ten - but I think that one of the reasons this would then perhaps perform differently is that it's quite unique. If you look at the types and styles of dramas in the top ten and imagine someone's coming in relatively new - they're probably going to hit that top ten for something to watch and W does present as being really unique and interesting so even if not watched at first, I can understand why it would be got to eventually by most watchers.
Replying to lord_varvara Jun 21, 2021
People don't know how to rate. They give a drama much higher numbered ratings than what their reviews suggest.…
The "Ranking" is a composite statistic as far as I can tell. It's capturing a number of factors and combining them together to give, I think, some kind of indication about how popular a show is but factoring in a wider range of stats and then I think putting a temporal bias on it so that it's more about what's *currently* boosting than just a stat which grows all the time. So, recent review scores, review scores perhaps marked as helpful, recent watcher count changes - that kind of thing. There could be all kinds of factors being considered to help derive that.

There's nowhere documented what it actually means and while to some extent I can kinda understand sites wanting to keep their "special sauce" top secret, I do have to question the value of a stat nobody understands properly because you can't actually be sure what you're seeing, which leads to misunderstanding and doubt - and somewhat defeats the objective of having the stat there in the first place.

I generally use the ranking to interpret its movement speed - so if a show has lower popularity (watcher count) but a much better ranking, then i'm envisaging at some point if that keeps up, that it will go above it, for example.

Great article! Of the older shows I have only watched Goblin and What's Wrong With Secretary Kim andI am thinking…
I don't think there's any misses on the top ten - though I must admit i've not seen Heirs or Boys over Flowers yet. It's Okay totally deserves its status and is well worth the watch, it's so brilliantly produced and the music is still frequently played on my spotify playlists :)

My Roommate is a Gumiho is a lot of fun, looking forward to the next episodes! :)

Thanks Anushka - yes it's been great going through the process and Cho Na helped me a lot as did the two editors involved (and im surue others who i'm not even aware of).

When I do something like this again, i'll have to make it less immediately current and more general so that it's still more relevant beyond just being around a specific date, which is fine, just about presenting the data in a different way and focusing on slightly different things I think!
Replying to lord_varvara Jun 21, 2021
It's interesting that oldies but goodies keep higher rating than newer dramas despite new ones having recency…
What I think i'm finding is that some dramas have a strong appeal in the short term, but in order to make it to the top ten they need to be able to last even beyond when they're getting exposure as a current drama - i.e. people need to keep talking about it, be excited by it, share snapshots from it and so forth. It takes a high quality drama to have that type of longevity - so even something like True Beauty which did exceptionally well when it was broadcast tailed off rapidly once it was no longer the current drama (I loved it personally!).

Certainly if you look at everything in the top ten, even the top twenty, there's something about each of them that has a lasting quality about it.

What I want to do is start capturing data on a more regular basis and then look for how dramas are moving - if I can figure out which ones are moving more rapidly, that might give a good early sight on what people are watching and continuing to watch long before they get near the top ten - similar to CLOY or Its Okay, though those were hardly difficult to expect to do well after their broadcast of course :)
