Duke Ding & SM typical faithful person to the nation and to the king, focuses on their own duty for the peace & wealth of the country (and the emperor favor them for their faithful).. others doing their duty for gaining favor and advantage.. and his father, he has personal reason why he mistreated SM
I just finished watching ep 28 and I'm afraid to continue watching the next episode. I'm worried that in the end SM and DZ will still die together.. So I will continue watching if they only hv a HE.. So I will wait after the remaining episodes air

in my view why SM father mistreated SM : 1. SM was born to woman from Jiang Family, which is maybe SM's father never loves her & dislike the Jiang Fam but to cover and to create the impression of a good husband and wife relationship, his father pretended to love his mother. SM's father actually had an affair and had a child with another woman, Song Han, but SM didnt know about this incident because SM has preferred to be with his uncle since childhood.
2. probably SM appearance/Visual, character, temperament resemble to Jiang Fam especially to his Uncle..
3. SM's father jealous of SM and SM's uncle. SM's uncle is also a duke with one of the highest military status and achievement, loved by the emperor's, the emperor's confidant.. For SM, his father jealousy and fear of SM bcos SM is the duke hair & has a high military position ( so SM's existence is actually has higher position than his father in the eyes of the emperor ), SM still young but already made so many great achievement, and the emperor always praise and labeled SM as DUKE DING's Cousin, DUKE DING's Military successor for every achievement he won, emperor never mentioned as Duke Ying's son.. so SM's father fell so frustrated, and people almost not recognize the existence of duke ying and his 2nd son

same thought as you,, I already put DZ's namee to my list member of THE MOST CLEVER/INTELLECT and Independent FL in cdrama, joined with Gu Minglan (story of Minglan), Zhao Paner (a dream of splendor), Shiyi (sword & brocade), Liu YuRu (destined), Li Wei ( new life begins) etc, I love drama when it has a clever FL.
