Title Sweet Combat Spoiler
Spoilers
So my review kept spoilers about the plot to a minimum but after thinking about the series I knew I needed to get this off my chest. So fair warning I’m going to shit on this talking about the show as if you’ve seen it.

At episode 23 it’s revealed that the Uncle Fang Yu loved so much committed insurance fraud because he wanted to leave money for his wife and child even though he was terminal. To do this, he fought a man who knew and was known for using a strike that could kill people during a MMA fight. This man was Ming Tian’s dad.

Literally everything that upended and ruined the main character’s life is all this uncle’s fault. He set Ming Tian’s dad up to kill him. Ming Tian doesn’t find out about this until the second to last episode; 13 episodes later. He doesn’t even get proper time to process the information.

So yeah that’s fucked.

But the worst part is that the aunt ran out of money and ends up getting hired to lie to Fang Yu about her husband’s death. The first is a white lie, that Ming Tian’s father is responsible for her husband’s death. To which Fang Yu is like, “The actions of the father totally make it so I can’t date his son despite Ming Tian clearly hating what his father did to my uncle.”

Then they get over it because it’s not Ming Tian’s fault, until the aunt comes back and is all like, “oh but the dad beat up the uncle the night before the fight. The dad was bad!”

And Fang Yu is like, “oh no this is even worse. Now I can’t even be in the same city as him. Yes evil grandpa I will go overseas, break up with my BF, and abandon MMA as you’ve been begging me to do so for ages only because Ming Tian’s dad, WHO MING TIAN HIMSELF DOES NOT LIKE, intentionally killed my uncle.”

The event that caused his father to drink himself to death and his mother to run out on all three of her kids, the thing that took away Ming Tian’s normal life, what forced him to abandon his own future for the sake of his brother and sister’s well being until he got the scholarship, is now being used against him by the first person he’s allowed himself to fall in love with.

Fuck
You
Fang
Yu

And then when the truth is revealed at the very end, Ming Tian does the right thing and doesn’t use guilt by association to hate Fang Yu. Because that’s what good people do. They don’t hold the actions of the parent or relative against the whole family. But Fang Yu did. And she got away with it too.

You can talk about the pacing and all that but this whole plot left such a bad taste in my mouth that it overshadowed the rest of the series for me because it was the main story. Ming Tian never did anything that warranted Fang Yu to be upset, it was all the evil family’s fault. Because god forbid the main character has a flaw other than being a pacifist to the point of not fighting back when he gets the shit kicked out of him.

God, at least the webtoon had him get legit pissed. Fuck this show.

Do you know where I can find the novel?
Oh my goodness thank you so much. Seriously I spent hours trying to find this You’re the bomb. I’ll just read one chapter a day that way I don’t run out too fast. :)

I really hope that they will stay true to the novel, though I do wonder, how they will show the forensic parts…
Do you know where I can find the novel?

Person Tim Pei
This man was what made Sweet Combat bearable and plays my favorite character in the Taoism Grandmaster. Damn do I want more shows where he has one of the lead roles.
