I'm happy that i could help. I understand you completely, when i was new to "xianxia, wuxia and xuanhuan" genre i was confused too and the endings were not something i was used to. In these types of dramas it is normal for the mains to die and later on be resurrected. These types of endings are very common. "The Starry Love" for example is another xianxia drama where the ending is like this. It is still a happy ending, knowing they came back but the bitterness is still there that we don't get to see them live happily ever after, we just know they came back and are happy again.

And as someone who loves the main lead in The Longest Promise, i would highly suggest The Untamed or if you like modern dramas, Oath of love. I don't think that the drama production team has commented much on the ending. But i personally think that their weibo post kind of gives off their real meaning to the ending. "When the snowy rosa flowers bloom, that is the day we will meet again."
SPOILER: But if you are worried about the ending and that is stopping you from watching the drama.. I think the ending was fine. Some people think about the ending a bit too deeply i think. What we see in the end is Zhu Yan walking past a snowy rosa and on the palm of her hand there is a petal that was left when Shi Ying died. she lets it go and the snowy rosa blooms and Shi Ying comes back. Not a shadow, but he himself. They smile to each other happily and the drama ends.
