I'm not trying to invalidate your feelings because I would certainly not understand since don't come from the place. I myself felt offended over some of the racist jokes/remarks/cultural appropriation shown in Kdramas or any dramas in general. But even my country is tagged as poor country in most of the western shows when it's definitely not the reality. I am from India so I can to some extent understand what you must be feeling. I've seen people saying Bollywood movies are Indian movies when that's not the case. Similarly many people just call North Indian food as Indian food when we have different food/culture /language throughout the country. Even within my country, People are stereotypical. But poverty isn't something to be ashamed of is what I feel. It's not country or continent specific but it's a terrible condition millions of people still live through. There's one Hollywood movie which showed the poor side of my country. It won Oscars too. But I particularly don't feel any less dignified for that matter. Because awareness around poverty and lack of basic necessities to any human should be acknowledged.
To be honest as an African myself I was extremely offended! But then again Africans have allowed whites to do…
With due respect to your feelings, you're comparing two different things here. If Chinese say Kimchi originates from china it's cultural appropriation. But that's not the case with what's shown in the drama. I would not have definitely minded if the drama writers chose my country to show their ML doing charity work. Because though we have rich people/culture/heritage here, poverty still prevails in some part of my country. It's a social issue and I'll feel happy if someone from the foreign country choose to volunteer and help the needy people.
It is not a stereotype about Africa in general. It is a particular reality in Africa. Male lead went there in…
I get your point. just like how people say they live in America when they live in US. But since Africa is mostly portrayed for it's poverty I get why people live there are sensitive over this. But here if they don't read too much between the lines then it's not that offensive or racist.

I admit there might be some parts of African countries with water scarcity and lacks basic necessities but they don't represent the whole Africa. They should have mentioned that particular place or area where the ml was volunteering but instead they just named the whole continent which was indeed ignorant on their part. But again like I mentioned we can take this ignorance with a huge grain of salt as it's just a plot device to show the separation between the leads and the ML has to enrich his public image. I guess that's the only thing the writers wanted to deliver which is why they ignored other details.
Okay I wanted to break my silence regarding the African issue. It was ignorant on the writers part to have not mentioned the exact country or place. But let's say this is just a plot device. The bottom line is the male lead was away for a year to do charity work and to show his angelic image to his public. I guess it can be taken with a huge grain of salt. I've seen much more ignorant, racist and offensive cultural appropriation in Korean dramas/shows. Though I might not exactly understand the gravity of the issue, but they have many times stereotyped my country as well in a much more offensive way. My point is as long as they don't cross the line, it can be just ignored/overlooked.
Wow! I just got 1 minute of interaction between the leads in Ep.1 Why do I feel that Tae sung already has a secret crush on Han Byul? Or maybe he hasn't realised yet that he likes her.
I watched the story preview which was released this morning. I don't know if I'm the only one who is feeling this but even in that preview, all the side characters had more screenspace than the leads (Especially male lead). Except for both the leads, Seulgi and Lee Jung shin, I've never seen any of the other cast before. I don't understand what's this story is going to be but I'm mostly tuning in only because I liked the leads chemistry from the previews and trailers. So, I'll be disappointed if they are given only little screenspace.

Although, I like the original version too but this one really stands out. The emotions hit so hard.
