You are probably right. Shen'ao town wasn't in the novel. And SML didn’t have so much presence. Originally this drama was registered for 40 episodes, then when it was being filmed they cut it down to 36. But when it received its distribution license it had only 30 episodes. I am guessing lot of the scenes from the novel were filmed but cut ✂️ during editing and post production. Maybe something to do with investors. I wish they had removed the Shenao bit instead.
Anyway from 19 onwards every episode has been enjoyable. We are able to see many cute scenes from the novel. That's progress ✨️ From the previews there are going to be many more. The proposal and the wedding look grand 💝

In the novel, there isn't like one particular moment where they suddenly realize that they are in love with each other and reveal themselves and confess. And it is following so in the drama. It happens slowly and gradually after her plagiarism case is sorted from the night when she falls ill when he takes care of her (episode 12). Their relationship kind of takes a new turn from there even before their game of not knowing each other is revealed at episode 14. Now at episode 15 there is a temporary glitch because she is angry/sad/disappointed (rightfully or wrongfully but that's how the scriptwriter have written) that he had been knowing the truth (them being school mates and that he is her secret crush) all along but still enjoyed playing along when she tried hard to conceal that very fact (although she still doesn't know that he liked her back from school days). In the novel there is no such thing like blocking him or going away to another town). They get closer to each other through some incidents (novel readers might remember the elevator malfunctioning, Lu Shenglan story, his dad's stroke and Zhou Jun case) and although they don't actually express it in words it is shown through their interactions that they much like each other. And in chapters ahead it is like taken for granted when his mom and sister meet her at his apartment that they are together (although they are still living separately)
Nothing happened between them back in their three years of high school and in the month or so after he returned from San Francisco. Now, all of a sudden, without any reason how will she be convinced that he falls for her? Remember he knows the secret crush was two way but she doesn't.
If the confession happened too quickly after they meet then there will be some commenters here who would criticize the scriptwriter for writing the transition too awkwardly 😂
Anyway it is definitely a slow burn romance and I understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea.
