The Du girl's name is Larkspur, the flower Lin Jin Qi was wearing, signifying a deeper relationship between them. Had they not come up with another plausible reason for him wearing the flower (which is not common to the area), everyone would assume she gave it to him and he accepted it. Think of it as a guy wearing his girl's "pin" (sorry this last reference might be confusing).

The name thing was because he was putting a face to the student that only got 4 points in math.
