Nomura Mansai II is a Kyogen stage actor, which is a traditional form of Japanese acting. It is an art, which non-Japanese people do not appreciate. But has thousands of years of history. So it is not horrible acting, it is quite the contrary. If you have watched Hanzawa Naoki or Vivant, the casts are filled with actors from very prestigious acting families that are specialised in Noh/Kyogen or Kabuki. To a Japanese person, saying that this is horrible acting is equivalent as saying that method acting sucks and that Al Pacino cannot act. I understand your opinion, but I just wanted you to know that for many Japanese people this drama was a showdown between two acting greats (Hasegawa and Nomura).
