It's better if you watched the first season, but I think it's completely fine to start S2 without watching its prequel. Having watched S1 will give you a clearer context on their relationships and how they became who they are right now.
I feel bad for the armoured warriors. They're considered no more than tools for their masters. Their existence in the drama displays the cruelty of class distinction, despite the god-like power they possess.
