The English title is just wrong. The Chinese title is an idiom means "no retreat" by breaking the pots and sinking…
I see. Well, that makes a lot of sense.

Likewise, I've been kinda struggling with this show. I've watched 5 episodes so far, and I'm thinking of dropping it, even though I am very conflicted about whether I want to. Because on one hand I can recognize that this is clearly a very high-quality show, with well-written characters, complex plot, really well directed and edited. On the other hand its primary focus is basically bureaucracy. I love the serious and realistic tone of the show, and I am interested in politics, but that usually implies warring and scheming, not the intricacies of conducting a conversion of farmlands to manage the budget gap.

Hey, I'm glad you found my review helpful. I thought nobody was reading them. I agree, melodrama can be fine in…
It is almost almost always rewarding to venture into the unknown. You don't always get what you expected, bu t you always come out with something new, thus expanding your consciousness.

I've heard so much about Nirvana in Fire. I have a Chinese friend on Instagram, who recommended it to me too. She said it's her favourite show. But that was years ago, back when I wasn't watching dramas at all. Perhaps after Genghis Khan I should check it out.

Do you have a method in learning Mandarin? What sources do you use? I feel like I've found a method, or I guess an algorithm in which to progress. I kinda think most methods out there are not very efficient or feel like a chore. If you'd like to discuss it, I could explain in detail, but perhaps not here and now. Comments are not most convenient for detailed discussions of anything :)

Well, I've not watched as many dramas as you did. Perhaps, if I watch something especially long and without romance, I'd feel the same way. I've only recently started tbh. I'm not a TV show guy in general, but I'm a big fan of Chinese history and culture, so I figured it would be a good thing to get a dose of that every day. I have seen a couple of dramas in the past though, before I started doing it regularly.

Yeah, I wanna get to Advisor's Alliance and Cao Cao too, but honestly, Cao Cao and Sima Yi in Three Kingdoms are cast and written so brilliantly, they kinda ruined any other depiction of these characters for me :D Which is a good thing. I'd say they're my top-2 characters in Three Kingdoms, with number 3 being Zhuge Liang.

You said "when I could follow the language more". Are you learning Chinese right now?

Yeah, tbf, I haven't been engaging much in conversations here, so probably have no one but myself to blame. Then again, I always struggle with socialization, even irl. But I'm planning to become more active here. Thanks!

Personally, I can completely enjoy a show without romance. Not sure what that says about me :D

I had just finished Three Kingdoms recently btw, and loved it. It did have a couple of romantic storylines, mostly for the secondary characters, but I'd say the show wasn't about romance. Most characters act rather realistic for the time period, treating marriage as mostly a political tool. Personally, I find this more interesting, because male and female characters have somewhat different perspectives on each other from the ones we have today. The show is mostly male-dominated though. But I think it has brilliant writing and casting, so I highly recommend it.

I have heard of Tribes and Empires, but I'm not hugely into fantasy, but I might give it a try in the future, since so many people are praising it.

Anyway, I'm glad you commented. I signed up on this website mostly to socialize, and so far it hasn't been happening. I hope you don't mind that I send you a friend request.

Thanks for this. Currently, I'm focused on watching more political dramas and Queen Dugu was one of the titles…
Hey, I'm glad you found my review helpful. I thought nobody was reading them.

I agree, melodrama can be fine in moderation and if it's executed well. Some of my favorite movies are love stories. But I felt that Queen Dugu was mostly a very generic melodrama, with no real substance, where people fall in love with no reason, and moral quandaries arise simply for the purpose of being an obstacle in the way of the couple getting together. Then again I can be really harsh on TV shows, because they take dozens of hours to complete, so I don't like to waste my time on something that wouldn't expand my consciousness a little. So, perhaps, take my review with a grain of salt.

As for Legend of Dugu, you might be right. I might actually enjoy that show. I have enjoyed some soap operas in the past. I'm not sure I will give it a try though, because again, it's a huge show and difficult to acquire, let alone dedicate my time into. Currently I have Genghis Khan (the Chinese show), and I'll probably watch that next. Let me know what you're gonna watch, I'm genuinely curious.

Damn, girl, 6 for music? I thought this had a magnificent soundtrack. I'm still watching, but the soundtrack is always the highlight for me.
