I could literally just watch Rak and Diao glance at each other while doing household chores with the laugh track and dog noises for 50+ hours and that would be ok
Thank you everyone involved with the production of this greatly made BL sitcom, one of it's kind.Would love the…
I agree with all of the above! Esp an arc with Diaoâs mother too who âwouldnât approveâ, either getting told off or won over if she tries to interfere, wouldnât mind seeing more plot with Rit, and to see if Diao be honest with his feelings, and in public? It would also need to be a secret at work! So much they could work with here, and lots of viewers interested. I would literally throw money at the producers if it meant we could get a second season!
I didnât know I would be so into a sitcom, but here I am, and honestly I want to wipe my memory and watch it again already! What am I going to do now that Iâve completed all the episodes? How can I fill this Rak Diao-shaped hole now in my heart???
I would like to give an identical twin point of view on this movie, which is odd for me to say because I normally steer away from twin/identical twin plots due to the overused and stale twin tropes. However, I was honestly pleasantly surprised and pulled in by the very real genuine acting, plot, story, balance, actors, messaging, pacingâeverything.
Here are some Not Me plot/real life comparison in the portrayal of identical twins: âOftentimes they show twins as doing everything the same, talking at the same time, imitating one another constantly. One thing people tend to forget to look past the appearance is that we are similar but different just like everyone else. Now, in this plot they have their differences which are even more defined by the fact that both Black and White had different upbringings and approaches to standing up for themselves and the law that make sense here (which also goes hand in hand with the nurture over nature philosophy) âI normally honestly hate when they use one actor to play twins, I mean it hard to find identical twins to play a niche role so itâs understandable why they do it, bit it kind of has always felt insulting, as if to say that twins only need to be represented by one person. Many times this is really due to the actor either overacting the characters to be so different that it seems forced or fake, or just awkward and odd transitions that make it obvious one actor is playing two people. However in Not Me the actor is not afraid to show the nuanced similarities as well as the differences which felt more genuine to me. One of the few identical twin castings by the same actor that I can fully applaud, like thank you for that. âYou can truly feel their connection and bond as twin brothers which is very hard to explain and be understood by other people (and many judge it as unusual because they just donât have that experience)âthe part where white (posing as black) mentions about never thinking he would feel the same bond with another in the same way he had with his twin resonated a lot since itâs a very old feeling to explain to others and expect from others as well. âIn my experience, yes, we do have the whole pain/emotional connection thing people talk about, but itâs not as intense as shown here. I donât feel happy 40 miles away and she suddenly feels happy or I slap my arm or submerge myself in water to try and make her feel my pain . It doesnât work like that. I have had my twin hurt her arm and I felt a pain in my arm severely at the same time, or I get anxious for no reason and I find out after that she had a flat tire. Even when I had surgery my sister felt intense pain in her stomach. So yes, it does happen. But in my experience, itâs more of a wavelength you have to be in the frequency of, but in Not Me they took the connection to a more dramatic extreme level that almost jumped into the waters of supernatural territory (synthesized drowning and crying, etc), however itâs a lakorn so like honestly I wasnât that caught up about it or even upset by it, since it enhanced the plot and wasnât used carelessly as a plot device. âAs mentioned before, distance also alters what me and my twin oddly call the âfishing lineâ (since weâre Pisces zodiac) tether connection that we have. Normally we have to be pretty far apart and no contact at all to wear it down, so the moving to Russia thing didnât seem odd at all to me, especially of the father wanted to fade their dramatic connection. âWhile we need plots that focus on the stories and struggles of underrepresented groups and voices (diverse, LGBTQIA+, body inclusivity, etc), some plots donât always revolve around those topics directly to get the message acrossâNot Me works these in masterfully by having them in the plot naturally. Not Me does this very well as the entire plot wasnât fully about them being twins or even about gay romance, or trans rights or same sex marriage it was a plot about justice and the legal system, concepts of right and wrong, finding a brothers assailant, but those topics did come up in a very natural way that was really wonderful and empowering (esp the LGBTQIA+ protest and fashion show, trans representation in the Law field, questioning of the legal system, business monopoly, art expressionism, second chances, law enforcement/police) and although the ideologies of Black and White couldnât be any more contrasting than their names represent in the beginning, by the end of the season their views seemed to both blend together to become a grey area where anything can happen. âTalking about similarities, what they did very well in developing the brothers is by not being afraid to make them both different as well as similar. For example, Black and White both go to school for degrees based in the law/justice/diplomatic fields with a strong sense of justice. While White has been brought up by his father to believe in the law and diplomatic course as a way to enact justice for the country, he begins to see the cracks in the facade and the unbalanced privilege in the systemâBlack on the other hand, with a seemingly cynical point of view and rebel attitude from the start, and perhaps set off by the falling out with their judge mother, has seen the hypocrisy all along and sought to fight the system in a radical way. While White and Black both end up with similar ideologies and rebel from their parents, they have different ways and points of views of supporting those that they love, protecting others (and each other), and standing up for a cause. âOne thing that did bother me throughout the series was the villianizing of Black, and I only say this because it plays into the whole âGood Twinâ âEvil Twinâ trope (even apparent in their names) which has become so stale and overdone that for a while it made me roll my eyes whoever Black was revealed to be, yet again, a trash bag for something or another, despite a person here or there occasionally saying something good about him or that he could be a good person. It kept on stating that White was better, nicer, kinder, the certified âgood oneâ and that Black was mean, possessive, headstrong, control freak, and violent âbad oneâ. It would have been a bit nice to see the blend between the two for them both a bit more. I would have liked more background on Black and how he got to be the enraged human that sought to rebel and create the original ROL group, like what tipped the scale (was it the fight with his mother, what was it the college chancellor did, did he witness something? There ainât smoke without fire, so we definitely need more character development for BlackâCould we get more in a potential season 2?). But I also liked who Black became towards the end if the season, which was someone who respected his brother instead of trying to protecting him negatively all the time, as someone who apologizes for pushing others away, and who is reevaluating himself and where he falls in the structure and where he belongs. As a twin it is a tug of war to be different and unique from each other without breaking apart from each other so the part when White says to Sean âwho would want to live in anotherâs shadow?â (Which I mention White had been doing the whole season previously), it made so much sense why Black would branch off to find his own place again. âI normally hate twin switch stories because they often play on twin tropes, and I have a hard time believing that they could pass behaviorally as the other without anyone knowing. What worked to Whiteâs advantage in this plot is that they arenât doing a full switch, that Todd, despite being trash, gave him intel, that Blackâs original ROL group was fairly new, ROL think itâs something to do with the fire, and realistically some people did suspect (because ofc the guy that dropkick throws guns out of peoples hands ainât gonna flinch at a punch to the face lol), and the last advantage was that no one knew about Blackâs twin (or much about Black, given how private he appeared to be), so it made so much more sense to me and felt more believable.
Thatâs my rant! My apologies it was so long, itâs been a while since I can provide an identical twin perspective on an identical twin plot that I actually like. Everything was just about perfect from beginning to end (my only dislike in the series is how little they downplay the amount of violence they use towards one another, though part of my brain rationalizes that itâs their version of law and how they settle things between one another, I feel like they forgive each other too easily for the violence they use on one another? Just me??? I would have def been pissed for a lot longer if someone choked me or knocked me out!) the only exception to this is GRAM WHO IS THE PUREST SWEETEST GOODEST HUMAN, I was rolling in at the last episode ready to throw hands if they tried to hurt one HAIR on Gramâs head, so glad they all got good endings with hope for change and the future.
I really hope there is a season 2, they have so much material they could work off of. If there is a season 2 I will be patiently waiting for it, with my twin, who currently just started the series đ
