I agree with your comment! The drama's been completely screwed up by the issues you're relating to. However, episodes…
No, it does not depend on historical period. An emperor is higher in hierarchy than a king. It goes like this: emperor->king->grand duke->duke->marquess->count->viscount->baron etc. That is why I made the distinction between prime minister and president. A president is the leader of a country without a monarchy and a prime minister is head of the cabinet in a country with a monarchy... The joke I was making is that apparently Yi Gon received a promotion, but we do not know how...

You must not be from a country with a monarchy, but a king is lower in title than an emperor. The only emperor still reigning is Naruhito of Japan. There are dormant emperors such as the descendants of Napoleon (France), Germany and Italy etc. The only other reigning sovereign ruler that historically carried the title of Emperor is Queen Elizabeth when there was still a British empire. A synonym for an emperor is a grand king . By the way, when you refer to anything related to an emperor, you speak of "imperial". "Royal" refers exclusively to "kings".
I was pointing out that "The King" is an inaccurate distinction for an emperor. Just as it is wrong to call Donald Trump a prime minister, as he is a president. For your information, you can only have a prime minister in a monarchy. Hence, the word "prime" as in "first" or "highest" minister. I was joking about that this is plothole, because you need to receive a promotion from a king to become an emperor, but we never saw the promotion...

I can give you a plothole. Why is the show called The King whilst LMH plays an Emperor? We do not call Donald J Trump a prime minister either, right? Questions, questions, questions...
