I feel like people keep on saying that the mother is only thinking about the daughter from the narrow perspective she has on life, this however is not an excuse for her actions. I feel like may Asian countries just lets old people's (spec parents) actions to be "Ohh there are doing it for love" which is just complete bs. Ik many old people who may have some orthodox ideas but are not such a complete bitch like the mother her. There is a bright line between 'doing it for love' and 'live life the way i want because I want to live through you and I want to make sure you are always in my control'.

Not saying that the mother does not love her daughter but she shld be held accountable.
