First and foremost, we see the completely underestimated by those around him and many commenting here, naive (faked, because otherwise he would already be dead) and kind-hearted Zi Yu with his few confidants surrounded by characteristically repugnant douchebags. Still waters run deep; interesting also his mother, her mysterious lover and possible father of Zi Yu. A small team is already forming around Zi Yu, hopefully with Yun Wei Shan on board, which is sorely needed.
Many criticize the love story; but the drama is so brilliantly written by Hwang Jin Young, with a slightly feminine touch and complex characters, that it evokes a wide range of emotions. I don't doubt for a moment the deep love between our lovable opportunists with hearts in the stranglehold of a misogynistic society, fears of trust and survival, and commitment to their family and friends. Thankfully, this is not a boring dramaland usual love story, and the special dynamic and connection between the two will continue.
Jang Hyun is more masculine and respectful than any of the other "men" in this drama. Gil Chae and Jang Hyun are a power couple and regardless of their choices, life circumstances and new partners, the longing and desire for each other will increase many times over.
This anti-drama drama is so fluid and true to life. The main characters make opportunistic decisions not for their own sake or because they are forced to do so by threats to the lives of their families, but because they want their family and friends to live a safe and dignified life. Gil Chae trades her body for the good of her family and a good future for her possible offspring. If Gil Chae had known that her love Jang Hyun was still alive, she would never have accepted this marriage proposal. The ruthless female man hunter is sure to be of interest to a sad and disappointed Jang Hyun. The equality accorded to our lovable and opportunistic lovers Gil Chae and Jang Hyun, who surf the gray areas of society and the drama world, is brilliant. Great drama! Bragging Yeon Jun and the officer are also opportunistic people, but for completely wrong or selfish reasons. The idiot officer can't handle Chil Chae, nothing to worry about. She's a league too big for him.
The drama is colorful and entertaining. Mu Zhuo Hua and Liu Yan are a great complementary couple. For those who want to see Xu Hai Qiao (Shen Jing Hong) in a ML role, I can recommend the drama The Dark Lord, a real insider tip. For me one of the best Chinese dramas and the MDL rating much too low.
This is masterful drama art; there are very few screenwriters and actors who can pull off such a complicated romance naturally in such a thrilling timeless and socio-critical film, which allows for characters in the gray area as main leads that captivate you emotionally. The reason that the drama is carried by a subtle lightness is the coolness and people skills of Jang Hyun, in the most hopeless situations you wait for the ace that he pulls out of his sleeve.
This drama is masterfully written by Hwang Jin Young in a timeless and socially critical manner with an unmistakable female signature. Yeon Jun is a total phony with an undeserved promotion who has the character traits of cheating on his fiancée, at least emotionally, even before the wedding. Jang Hyun, whom everyone, except Eun Ae, recognizes as a womanizer and unreliable, is in reality, with his feelings towards a woman, the reliability in person. Eun Ae and Jang Hyun are a team that respects each other and loves to take Gil Chae for a ride together. Great drama!
It just ripples along without anything special happening until Jin Hee takes heart and takes the relationship or lack thereof with her love interest to the next level and then it ripples along again. Still, you always looked forward to the new episodes, I can understand those who liked it and those who did not. A few themes that are rarely addressed in Asian dramas I found inventive.
A thrilling and timeless anti-war film with intense romance that shows how senseless and despicable are the motivations of these young village aristocrats led by Yeon Jun who sacrifice their loved ones for this decadent and inhumane royal house. There is some confusion about the relationship between Gil Chae and Yeon Jun although Eun Ae has long seen through her best friend Gil Chae that their relationship is not based on love and the deep feelings of Gil Chae for Jang Hyun are as clear as day for Eun Ae which unfortunately may not rule out that Gil Chae later decides for a certain period of time for a relationship expected by her social class.
An anti-hero, an anti-war drama, social criticism that can be applied to today, strong women asserting themselves in a misogynistic environment and an intense romance in the making . Screenwriter Hwang Jin Young and her actors hit the nail on the head with this drama. While the young aristocrats go out to save the fugitive king, winning the Darwin Award in the process, leaving their wives defenseless for the offspring of their enemies; the despised anti-hero saves the women from that very fate. Absolutely terrific...
