It's hard for me to differentiate because people into punk for looks would have been called poseurs. The clothing and look was an extension of the music, not the other way around. It would be like in 15 years where people say they dress "hip hop" but do not listen to the music, people around today would think it's cosplay. It would have been better had they not used the word "punk" but then I have to understand it's Japan, a country well known for surface level imitation. I was in university when Black American culture was imitated and Japanese scholars complained of surface level imitation, based on looks, fashion and music, without understanding the Foundational Black American culture. Same for punk just being about clothes and look, not the underground music originating in the United States, resonating and blowing up with the working class youth in England, then traveling globally. There were punk bands in Japan back then too.
