well, they're probably in different stages in life. when you are at those ages you want to experience and live different things, and if you dont do it, you may end up regretting the lost time. The gap would be different if they were older, but your 20s and 30s there are too many changes in your life.
But I'm just generalising, so who knows. It broke my heart seeing their faces when they found out.
