Give the series a chance
When I started watching this series, it seemed kind of goofy and not much substance to the story line or the acting, but if you hang on and get through the first three episodes, things definitely start to change in episode 4. The last three episodes show a completely different tone in series as well as the acting, both for the better.
If you get by the fact that a teacher is liking a student, the story works. In fact, the way it ends up, it was written very well in the sense that nothing happens between these two characters until after Toki's graduation. Plus the fact if you take a step back, these actors are actually only two years apart in age off camera.
I did feel bad for Sahara's first love Nekoto, who shows up later in the series. That was a good add on story & some good acting by Hori Kaito. It's unfortunate how it ends for him, but there's always one too many people in these dramas and someone has to lose.
Overall a good series.
