First of all SDM later admits that she needed to hear those words and that she never found HJP's nitpicking annoying. Instead of blindly telling SDM that everything she does is right, HJP does his best to tell her how cruel reality is. HJP loves SDM, therefore he has no reason to make SDM feel pitiful and cry because SDM's pain is essentially his own. However he recognizes the importance of breaking the truth to SDM, to prepare her for when reality hits. This is the distinction NDS can't make. He is either delusional or simply doesn't have the guts to tell her the truth.
