SATC is a celebration of women, and American women at that. This is not a drama that can be successfully ported to countries with little or no concept of women's sexual freedom. Korea can produce a drama about the friendship between four women--even four dynamic, beautiful, powerful women--and their love for a city (what, Seoul?), but it won't be about women's ownership of their own sexuality and their joyous expression of it. I mean, can you imagine Park Shin Hye with her famous open-eyed, rigid pecks as Samantha?
Two reasons: either DramaFever was not profitable (or profitable enough to outweigh whatever licensing difficulties DramaFever was encountering, such as Kocowa) or the parent company, Warner whatever, wants to repackage/reboot Asian and other programming or spin it off.
Or both.
There is a market for Asian programming. The issue is cutting through the licensing difficulties and designing a model that ensures profitability.
This drama (available now on Netflix) is better than the low ratings here suggest. It is not, however, for anyone who is in the mood for a light watch. It's frequently grim and triggering and there are several rape scenes that are brutal and not at all romanticized.
Show gets almost everything right, with only a few small missteps.
I started watching this in the afternoon, and had to finish it all in one sitting, which really annoyed my dog.
Remarkable for a lakorn, there are real kisses. Once the shock of watching a lakorn with skinship passes, it's somewhat unexciting and not even the very beautiful actors can energize this.
The best thing about it is the subbers who've made it available for us to watch. I love me some lakorn subbers.
We have to have a discussion about why a romantic relationship between a boy whose balls only dropped yesterday and a 25 year old woman is whacked, even if sex isn't involved until he's of legal age?
i can smell the comunity freaking out and im enjoying it but really i dont think age gap love is a crime itself,…
The age gap is, in fact, a crime itself.
If a sexual relationship occurred between individuals of any gender who were 14 and 25, respectively, and the 25 year old was caught, prosecuted, and convicted, the 25 year old would a) do prison time and b) be placed on a sex offender registry.
hi!!! i didn't find it on amazon prime, could you give me the link please?
subs at Amazon Prime aren't automatic. You may not have them turned on. There's a setting for them at the top right of the Amazon player . I'm watching from Prime in the US.
After I've watched a hundred hours of Cdramas (hey, not that hard to do--that's basically 2 shows!) and all their incumbent silliness, Kdramas and their brand of nonsense starts to look reasonable to me.
I hate when the characters talk to themselves. Out loud. Who does that?
I hate that there are sleep scenes, and the lights are on. On both sides of the bed. Don't Kdramas have lighting directors who know how to provide set lighting AND have the bedroom lights at least look like they're off? And do they not wear sleep clothes in S Korea? People go to bed wearing sweaters and zippers? And you can't get a pillow case in S Korea that doesn't look like it could double as sand paper? Do S Koreans accept such a big level of discomfort when they sleep--because why?
I hate when one of the characters is standing in the road and sees a car or truck coming for them, and gets hit, when they have more than enough time to get out of the way.
What I hate most of all is how these all sort of indicate a lack of respect for the intelligence of the viewer.
Ffs. Another Cdrama where the FL starts by being strong, confident and assertive, but her brain turns into goo because of a crush.
First, you have to suffer through the scheming and manipulation of a secondary woman character Qingqing, who is so annoying and cringe inducing, you'd like nothing better than to drop her down an open manhole. (Seriously. Every time she's on screen, you want to fast forward while you're praying earnestly that the writers are reading comments and finally get rid of her. And then the drama gods hear you, and she's gone.)
And then what happens is the FL, Manman ("Manny", I kid you not) gets another shot at her youthful crush from 13 years previous, and so the writers make the FL just as cringe inducing as Qingqing., so it's like Qingqing never left and you feel like screaming.
And don't get me started on the ML, whose main qualities seem to be handsomeness and a sense of self-abnegation so strong that any of the women characters could have sex on a table right in front of him and he'd run to get them a bottle of water. Ugh.
All of these characters are more rage inducing than romantic or comedic.
Another Cdrama that makes me want to pound the crap out of the writers.
This drama isn't for everyone. But people who like it, like it a lot. This drama was a game changer for me, and I spent at least two years trying to find and watch dramas that gave me similar feels. Some came a little close, but that's all.
There are better kdramas, and I've seen them and liked them, but "Secret" is and will probably always be my #1 drama fav.
Or both.

I'm trying to be optimistic about this. Maybe this creates a new opportunity for a different company or something. But I'm so sad.

The "community" is legit "freaking out".
But no.
