No , he did not. I think the only person that knows a yin is the phoenix as of now is the phoenix Queen that is in seclusion because she has seen a yin before . He made them master and servant because he did divination on gu jin and found out that a yin is strongly connected to the tribulation that gu jin will go through in the future so he believed that a yin will be able to help him overcome it .
