No sparks?

I genuinely don’t understand how this has an 8.3 rating, guys. 😭 Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad, but isn’t that a little generous? It was cute, and I appreciate that the plot felt fresh and different from the usual K-drama formula. Ten episodes were more than enough, though…My biggest issue was the lack of chemistry between the leads. The male lead eventually turns into a lovesick puppy, which, let’s face it, is classic K-drama territory. But I wanted some FIRE between them! Some tension, some butterflies, SOMETHING. For a drama with this premise, I expected a few more sparks. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel any. No sparks whatsoever (pun absolutely intended).

Not my cup of tea, so keep that in mind as you read this review!

My Mister is undeniably a well-written drama, with superb acting and genuinely moving performances. The story is beautifully crafted, and I can absolutely understand why so many people love it.

That being said, it simply wasn’t my cup of tea. As much as I appreciated the quality of the writing and acting, I struggled to stay invested. Toward the end, I found myself dragging through the episodes, wanting to finish the story but also looking forward to moving on to something else.

I also have to give credit to IU, because I genuinely think this is her best acting performance to date. She portrayed Lee Ji-an with such restraint and emotional depth!

Overall, I think it’s a very good drama, just not one I particularly enjoyed watching. I can recognize its excellence without necessarily connecting with it…

I just wanted a little less bakery and a little more village.

Bonjour, Your Bakery is cute, wholesome, and genuinely heartwarming, but I went into it expecting something closer to Village Barber, which felt much more intimate to me.

All the credit to the cast: they worked incredibly hard and their interactions felt sincere. But because the village is so small, they often ended up serving the same people, and I’m not sure many of the elderly residents even knew who the cast members were. I actually found that charming, but I wish the show had used it as an opportunity to focus more on the villagers themselves: their lives, memories, and stories. I did love the stories we did get.

It’s still a sweet and genuine watch.

Lovely Romance, Complicated Message

I could have given this more stars because I genuinely loved the love story. However, I struggled with the way the drama handled disability.

We meet Sol as a person with a disability, unable to pursue the career she wants partly because the workplace itself is inaccessible. Yet when the story gives her another chance at life, her disability ultimately disappears too. She didn’t go back in time with the goal of preventing the accident or “fixing” herself, so I wish the drama had allowed her to remain a wheelchair user and still have the same beautiful romance, career, and happy ending.

I still adored the romance, but I wish the story had explored this part of Sol’s life with the same care it gave her relationship with Sun-jae. I also wish the grandmother’s storyline had been developed further, it had so much emotional potential.

If you liked This Is Us, this is for you.

Raw, relatable, and incredibly touching. It was refreshing to watch a drama centered around other kinds of love, especially the complicated, imperfect love within a family.

But what stayed with me most is the reminder that our parents are really just older versions of the children they once were. We grow up believing they have life figured out, only to eventually realize they are experiencing it for the first time too.

I watched this when my own baby was only a few months old, so for the first time I could see a story like this from the parent’s perspective as well as the child’s. It made me think about the kind of mother I want to be and how I hope to raise my son knowing that I don’t have all the answers either…that I’m living this life for the first time right alongside him.

Beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, and full of heart. Easily in my top three.

I just wish more people would watch it because I desperately need more people to talk about it with.

My dearest; my favorite drama of all time so far.

What I love most is the absolute devotion of the male lead to the woman he loves and I mean DEVOTION.

There is something almost old-fashioned about it: the longing, the restraint, the things left unsaid. The exchanged looks, the smallest touches of their hands, the way a seemingly insignificant gesture carries enormous meaning. It reminded me so much of the yearning in Pride and Prejudice: a romance where a look across a room can somehow say more than an entire confession.

And the yearning in this drama is painful!

At the beginning, he is trying so hard to win her while she is determined to resist him, and I loved that she doesn’t simply forget the man she loved before. Her first love continues to occupy a piece of her heart, which makes her feelings and eventual growth feel much more human. Neither character remains the person we meet in the first episodes. War, separation, loss, sacrifice, and love transform them both.

But Jang-hyun’s devotion is what completely won me over. If you want a drama where the male lead is absolutely, hopelessly devoted to his woman, this is the one. His world can be filled with other beautiful women (even women who remind him of her) and somehow that only makes his loyalty to Gil-chae more obvious. For him, there simply isn’t another woman. It is her.

I also loved that the romance exists within a much larger story. The historical setting isn’t merely decoration. We see the suffering of ordinary Joseon people, their attachment to their homeland, and questions of loyalty, duty, survival, and sacrifice. In a beautiful way, that larger theme is reflected in Jang-hyun himself: while others wrestle with loyalty to king and country, his deepest and most unwavering loyalty is ultimately to the woman he loves.

It is romantic without making love easy. It understands that devotion is not just saying “I love you”; sometimes it is waiting, protecting, sacrificing, returning, and choosing the same person again and again.

The looks. The hands. The longing. The loyalty.

PS: And that boat scene…when she suggests the rumors about him being a eunuch might be true, and he just laughs. The confidence in that laugh, followed by his response… so charming.
