The Princess, The Scholar, and That One Facial Expression
Let’s get this out of the way: Li Hongyi’s Shen Xiao has one expression—and it’s “I am morally conflicted but also constipated.” That said, the man has presence, and I’m choosing to believe his face will unlock new emotions by Season 2. (Prayer circle.) Meanwhile, Kong Xue’er’s Princess Li Shu is out here playing 4D chess while everyone else plays checkers. She’s scheming, sharp, and serves “Black Lotus” realness—no damsel nonsense here.
The plot? Scholar sleeps with princess, passes imperial exam as top scorer, then publicly drags her at his first banquet. Romance, amirite? It’s enemies-to-lovers with backstabbing, power plays, and enough tension to cut with a guillotine. At ~30 mins per episode and only 18 episodes, it’s a tight, no-filler sprint—perfect for binge-watching while pretending you have a life.
Downsides? The second half gets a tad predictable, and some side characters steal screen time from the main chaos gremlins. But honestly? It’s a solid 7/10—fun, fast, and furious.
P.S. I saw BTS of Li Hongyi in Hidden Shadows, and he’s buff now. Like, “forgot the plot, just show the abs” buff. Hubba hubba. Kong Xue’er, please take all my money and star in everything forever.
