For Itazura na Kiss, I understand the frustration with the male lead being a block of wood. My favorite version of that drama is the Thai version; Kiss Me. Male lead is definitely not a block of wood towards the female lead. Very refreshing.

Madame Antoine: your wish for a sad backstory to explain his character? Granted! They don't get much into it until the last 4 episodes of the drama though. He does get better once he realizes what's going on with his feelings but it comes a little late. At the point the tables have turned and Go Hye Rim is out for blood. Happily Ever After? Check.
