Touching, idealistic story that plays into your expectations - and it's a good thing!
Brace yourselves for a fantastic, emotional journey as you follow Haruna Tsubame and her inspirational new acquaintance to witness as they, step by step, dismantle the long established order of Meiran High School Academy and carry out their carefully planned revolution!
To a fan of school settings and their traditional portrayal of social hierarchies:
- the privileged, rich student groups with influential parents
- the teachers that cater to them
- the underdog main lead that decides to/is forced to confront them
this series has everything that you could ask for, hope for and expect. To be a connoisseur of a genre also means to be eager to experience certain themes again and again and still continue to enjoy them, provided that the box they are wrapped into is sufficiently unique and not a cheap copy.
And to me, Gakkou no Kaidan was perfect in that regard. Every plot development that I predicted, I welcomed with enthusiasm - because I wanted them to happen, was glad that they did, and - in most cases - was satisfied with their execution.
Gakkou no Kaidan is a series with a cast of talented actors, well suited for the characters they play, an excellent OST ("Hankei 5 Metre No Sekai" and "Kagaisha" deserve a mention - they truly turn every scene they were used for into something special), a strong touch of theatrics in how it's directed, and plenty of inspirational, moving moments that will make you shed a tear more than once.
P.S If you've seen 3 Nen A Gumi - yes, you will absolutely like this one too!
