'In 1960, mainland dance film The Lotus Lamp came to Hong Kong’s theatres in celebration of the People’s Republic of China’s tenth anniversary. Three years later, Shaw Bros and MP & GI, two leading film studios in the territory, put into production the same film in the form of Huangmei Diao opera that was immensely popular at the time. Yueh’s allcolour widescreen version is Linda Lin Dai’s posthumous work which marks the anniversary of her passing. In this fairytale, a filial son saves his deity mother who is incarcerated for her affair with a human lover. In ways both tough and tender, Yueh made use of hard-fought combat scenes to create unusual tension and solemnity in this romantic adventure between the mortal and the immortal. An extraordinary Huangmei Diao epic which champions freedom, loyalty and fighting spirit.' (source: filmarchive)
