yea i dont know why they say childhood sweetheart because it makes it hella confusing with the whole familial back story. In the novel, Xuan's father and Xiao Yao's mother are siblings, they are children from the Empress (she is special because of her noble lineage ) the other uncles are all emperor's children from concubines. It was extremely heartbreaking in episode 1 because all the children from the Empress died in battle so Xuan and Xiao Yao are the only ones left from her lineage. So Xuan has the most legitimately claim to the throne. But their grandfather worked too and sacrificed too much to easily declare an heir to his kingdom . He wasn't in love with her as a child , he only fell for her later on because to him she's his everything, the family he's always had.

he was never actually the 1st ml in the book but he was the first guy she knew since she knew him since they were children. even though they mention 4th ML he was also actually a supporting character. There were 3 volumes for the book and each volume was a specific title referring to one ml, Lost You Forever is for her cousin/friend because he will never be able to have her even if he can never let go of his love for her. in the early episodes of the drama we are introduced to them all at the same time and she will spend time individually with them later on too
