There is no game in the novel. In the novel, the people who get pulled into the doors are those who are near death. In the series, if the ending is to be interpreted, then LinLin got hit by a car and was in a coma for 5 days and entered the spirit realm which he interpreted to be the video game. So either there was no game developer and actually no game. Or, the game did exist and was destroyed and wiped from everyone's memories. Anyway, LinLin then spent the remaining 50 years of his life refusing to believe he made Ruan Nanzhu up, so he figured out how to use virtual reality to enter the spirit realm. Finally managed it, and got to see Ruan Nanzhu again, Titanic style. Or, you know, maybe he died at his computer. In any case, he made it there because Ruan Nanzhu says, "Welcome to the spirit realm", and all the others said they waited a long time for him. So... bitter sweet ending...?
I personally love the novel a lot more, but the series did well with what they had to work with.

In the novel, it's not a video game. The people who are near death are pulled into the doors as a way to save themselves. The more doors they pass through is the longer they can extend their deaths. The closer they were to death before going into the doors is the higher the door level they get pulled into at first. And if they die in the door then as soon as they exit the door they will immediately drop dead.
In the end, both LinLin and Nanzhu survives Door Eleven. For door 11, it's an alternate world exactly like the real world with those who died being alive, in the day. At night the nightmares come, where the person has to escape from all the horrors of their previous doors. The two leads can only meet at night. Eventually though the night gets shorter and shorter until the nightmares are like a dream. LinLin realizes the key is behind the clock but there are two keys. One is to choose the fake dream and the other is to return to a real death. That is Door Twelve, the choice. LinLin chooses to go back to the real world. Nanzhu couldn't figure out that his key was behind the clock so he stayed 3 extra days. Meanwhile those 3 days was 1 year for LinLin.
In the 3 days, Ruan Nanzhu watches LinLin grow up from being a kid who was pulled into the doors. LinLin went through all the doors on his own and eventually founded Obsidian as an adult. Ruan Nanzhu found himself thinking that he wished he went through the doors with LinLin, and then he realizes that he manipulated the situation so that he could do that. It turns out that when LinLin got to Door 12, as the god of the doors, Ruan Nanzhu made the choice for him, and wiped his own memories and morphed LinLin's memories so that LinLin restarted the doors with Nanzhu by his side. So the entire novel was LinLin's 12th door, and because the god of the doors fell in love with him. After watching all that play out, Ruan Nanzhu decided to exit the doors. As soon as he did, the fake memories and real memories merged so everyone outside remembered Nanzhu and felt close to him, even though logically they kind of couldn't understand why. Once Nanzhu left, the 12th Door sealed itself. LinLin realized really quickly that Ruan Nanzhu is the abyss but he didn't care because he loves him and always wanted to have someone who he could rely on who could rely on him and now he has Ruan Nanzhu.
There's an extra printed chapter about Ruan Nanzhu being a god with a rose garden and he is the gardener. All the roses are the same with red petals and thorns. Most die and some turn black. They all pretty much react the same. But there was one little rose that got his attention. It was like all the other roses, it laughed and cried and screamed but it was also stronger, and more tenacious, and instead of turning black or becoming covered in thorns it just bloomed more. So the more it got his attention was the more he wanted to protect it. Eventually the gardener realized that he was playing favourites. And he realized that he'd gotten to the point where he wanted to be by his rose's side as another rose. So he erased his own memories and met LinLin at that 1st door and as soon as they met, he kinda smelled the scent of roses and knew that LinLin was special to him.
