I just wanted to explain my take on the subject and just wanted to point out that he was forgettable in 'The Double' mainly because his role was insignificant (role could have been played by anyone, it would still be bland). Cheng Yi is a Central Academy of Drama's graduate though (prestigious film academy from the big 3) and he's still doing productions that you look down on... (Liu Xueyi is too and he's still stuck with what you called cheap prods) Does he has a choice? Probably not but he's still getting work (Mysterious Lotus Casebook was very enjoyable and did quite well in the domestic market)...Industry is not in good shape and that's a worldwide thing. Finding work in this field is already a blessing.

Thing is he didn't have much of a role in 'The Double' despite being listed as 'main role'....I think he has potential, he was good in 'Love of the Divine Tree' imo (still he's unfortunately cast in those third wheel roles whose characters become insufferable after being rejected) He was also good in that modern drama (Falling before fireworks) Plus, that's not his fault if his dramas are aired back to back🤷 Just saying...
