Exactly. They pick a decent book and turn it into a mess by turning the leads into cotton heads with a penchant for self sacrificing heroics. And the plot is always dragged thru the mud to fit the standards of c ent. Almost every xianxia this year had this problem. And the characters are tailored to fit the fluff rather than their growth or environment. Its like the plots are all manufactured with a single theme in mind without much space for innovation and it only seems to be getting worse with every passing year. Last year my biggest disappointment was who rules the world. The fluffy plot and depthless characters killed me. I had to put down the plot points that aggravated me on a sheet of paper to get it off my chest for TLP. And let me tell u it was a long long sheet.
Also unless u have grown to love XZ, RM and want to see their union, my suggestion is pause or skip to scenes with only them. The story heated up in like the last 3 episodes and gave me a headache with all the problems and the resolution was a mess to put it simply. It was built well and had the worst sort of crash landing as it went up in flames. Although the actors seem to have given it their best. The actress, despite the criticism was such a treat to watch.
Sorry for the long comment. As someone whose an avid reader and a fan of well written stories ur comment really struck a nerve. The west is too much skin and the east is too much fluff. Lovely talking to you.

Seeing each other 27 times in 27 years does not feel very happy to me. But hey this is a xianxia and the ending shows both leads in one frame. And a lot of meaningful/meaningless hints littered all over the drama. It shouldn't be difficult to weave a HE ourselves. Personally, he didn't die because he didn't leave a body and his death was in a illusion world and he's a cultivator brought back from death. So he came back from the flower petal after recuperating and lived with her for 27 years... Sounds and feels better?

After 40 episodes I was left with a distressing dissatisfaction. Your comment jolted me into awareness that it was the bungled plot that refused to let any character properly shine beyond romance.

This was mentioned in the novel but never in the drama. Check the scene when DSM and Cm are explaining the spell to her. they do not mention dying and living together. At all.

my two cents..... if SY did die then that renders all of zhu yan's sacrifice useless. Half her life span, her senses, yuan, her parents, all of her love gone for naught. And SY is one unlucky little hamster to have had only one decent shot at happiness and even that went down the stinking drain of yunhang.

Ultimately both shi ying and zhu yan are hellbent on parallely dishing out a headache and heartache to the viewers by simultaneously losing their handle.

Someone needs to give Shi Ying a crash course in dating and romance. And it shouldn't be from DSM or CM. Man's a mess and every time he opens his mouth i feel a it more sorry for zhu yan...
