You must be misunderstanding something here. Bollywood doesn't even try to lure international audience. It makes more than enough catering to local audience and Indians all over the world. As much as I'd want to see this industry change it's ways I really can't see it happening. And as weird as having songs and dances in middle of the plot, my life would have been boring pile of shit without them. All those songs and dances are our entertainment for all of our lives. Now that I got exposure to international cinema I can't say they are shit now.

If you don't like songs just skip them. Bollywood has the theme of celebration for most of it's movies. We like to watch movie as a celebration with all the colours, dances, songs, fights etc.... Unfortunately that is what turns off most of non-Indians but that is the Indian way. There are very very few movies if you want to avoid these things and there are a few movies you don't want to avoid them at all like 3 Idiots.

Watching Indian dramas all my life and it's very very painful to watch them. Every drama is about family and family values to the point you get completely sick of them. They go on for about 1000 episodes and don't have a definite storyline. They can go on for 3 generations at times. Emphasis on romance between leads is very less and mostly it is all about struggles of married woman in husband's house,how she will be ill treated,how someone in the family will try to kill her for the pettiest of reasons possible. These dramas are made to cater 35+ years women in rural and backward India which makes up most of the population. They never try to do anything different. It's the same story again and again. Basically other than those women Indians are not at all interested in dramas actually hate and loath them.
