But we know when and why: he became a soul shifter soon after the birth of Jang UK. Jin Mu killed him to hurt his master Gwuanju Jang Kang (Cho Chung and Jang Kang were good friends) justifying his action by saying that it was to protect the secret of Uk's birth, born under the star of the king.
My guess is that Jin Mu forced his soul out and back in using an extraction orb previously cursed by Shaman Choi. Body and soul were still his. He kills his family without even realizing it, like a sleepwalker state, the same way Mudeok went on a rampage and killed Jin Woo Tak and Uk.

Naksu only targets soul shifters cursed to run wild by Jin Mu because they are no longer useful to him. The Naksu's fight against Park Jin and a bounch of his army is a suicide mission organized by Jin Mu to get rid of her. All we know is that she reach Chisu lvl very quickly, like other talent mage for example Seo Yul. Perhaps her anger and determination helped speed up the process.
