I should have written this when I first joined My Drama List, but here we go.
My first drama was Playful Kiss which I believe was on Netflix back in 2012. I remember cringe-laughing at the flasher and thinking, "What am I even watching?!" But I was hooked by the cuteness, slow burn and focus on story rather than what I now call "skinship." I was sick of watching shows where the leads make out and/or jump in bed with no mental or emotional build up like they do so often in Western TV shows. It was so refreshing to see the mere act of holding hands was actually a significant moment.
My next discoveries were You're Beautiful, Boys Over Flowers, The Heirs, Secret Garden, The Greatest Love and so many more. Thirteen years later, my tastes have grown from goofy, simplistic high school romances to truly awesome shows that I appreciate across all genres. While my preference is for romance from Korean, I have watched some dramas from Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan and Thailand. I don't remember most of those and resist watching anything that isn't from Korea now. I don't know why, but feel they make better dramas overall and I prefer that culture. I also find that I enjoy listening to the Korean language more than other languages. In fact, I found myself understanding some key Korean phrases after watching so many dramas, so I was motivated to learn Hangul. I wish I had the motivation to learn it more!
Thanks for reading!
