I think the numerical score you gave is a bit high; I'd put it more in the 6-7 range, but I agree with you that taking difficult, realistic topics in a sincere way should merit some bonus points. Thank you for your useful review! It helped me decide whether to finish the series
It could work... it just feels like a rushed production...
I agree that the premise could have been fruitful, and maybe the same team given more time and resources could have executed it well, but I'm specifically frustrated with the writing. The behavior of each character was so outside of what can be accepted or believed from a rational human, and inadequate evidence was given to explain such irrationality. Maybe the audience can convince itself that Shin JW was so sheltered and trapped in his own trauma that he didn't know how to behave like anything other than a mildly psychotic stalker, but it's the writer's job to make that as smooth as possible for the audience through dialogue, behavior, and scenario, and I think they failed. Exactly as you said, Ji Hoon, who seems for all other scenes like a friendly but still rational person, somehow in the presence of Jae Wo insane boundary crossing and nonsensical comments, becomes incomprehensible to any watcher not 100% willing to let the plot justify all oversights. Anyway, I'll just end up rehashing your same points if I keep ranting hahahah. My argument amounts to the same thing: characterization left a lot to be desired.
Thing had the bost obnoxious MC I've ever seen in BL. Srsly, watching a toxic sociopath playing cake shop owner…
I'm sorry my review didn't save you those two hours. Luckily I have completely scrubbed the experience of watching from my mind, so retrospectively, it's like it never happened ;) I'm wishing you the same good luck 😉
I don't know how you couldn't connect to the characters when the acting was so on point and their backstory was…
Thanks for your comment. I do think the acting was great! I think my complaint is more reflective of how the plot was pieced together - more on editing and writing. I think the story and cast created fertile ground; I just didn't feel it was executed to deliver that potential.
Everything this director has touched has excellent quality in all the things that matter to me: characters portrayed as humans, attention to rational behavior, explaining emotional states behind behavior that would seem out of character in another director's hands, compelling inter-character chemistry, editing that doesn't feel drawn out for no reason, and more that I can't list bc I've been binging dramas for 38 hours without rest and my brain is dead.
