For me, the Untamed is superb because it has the thriller aspect (I mean WWX practically died several times) and the great chemistry between the actors. The fact that it has a huuuge and I mean huge main characters makes it also very enjoyable. Some other shows have a great story and ML/FL but it feels so lonely because they don't have friends or other supporting actors. Even if you compare the Untamed anime first episodes when just 2 disciples where fighting and compare it to the live action where about 20 disciples went to fight, it feels so much warmer. So I would give it to story + big cast first + chemistry. Following that would be the handsome faces. I will not talk about XZ's acting because he portrayed every emotions perfectly, so you became really immersed in the story. But this is a given of course. If it wasn't for him, maybe the series would have less fangirling and less praise if the ML messed up the emotions. But partly, you are right, but mainly for younger still maturing audience. For us, it is beyond this obsessive fangirling and boyfriending them ;)
Three things I wanna add that probably added so much to ppl liking the Untamed is the marketing, the song choices (compare anime to live action) and the so many behind-the scenes because we got to see the real personalities of the actors.

It is similar to the Untamed where they don't express it in the series but the subtle hints you can understand that it is based on bl. Like when he said if you are on this mission I will not concentrate etc. But since I do not watch bl with bl scenes, so I like how you get the thriller and the bromance/intense caring without having actual scenes just with gestures. But you definetely get the vibe.
This was a great drama. It was also my first drama from Taiwan. It was a great introduction to dramas from Taiwan…

It was good not as bad as described in many comments. So the setting is good (similar to while you were sleeping), and the ML is realllly good and his voice in the opening theme is great, too. Hope he is in more projects in the future. Coming back to the story, yes they did miss the main point of Amensalism and only tackled it a bit at the end, and there are unneccessary twists in the last couple of episodes where you ask yourself how does this come to that. But still, I enjoyed it and find it one of the better Taiwanese dramas in recent years.
It is a light watch nothing really new in the story, but it is not bad. Some things got resolved too fast like him being sick and then not and the fact that she had a butterfly tattoo. It needed to be more dramatic.

He was very great in expressing emotions in the Untamed indeed. But the thing that makes us love him more is actually the behind the scenes of the drama because it shows he is hardworking, responsible, and at the same time funny and silly. Similar to Weixan character actually.Hope he will bounce back from all the hate going around till now.

People forgive actors who have cheat scandals, taxes scandals and eveything and when he didnt do anything directly it is taking longer? China's fandom is very toxic compared to other countries. Hope he will get back soon, but tge short interview that was posted recently with the apology shows he is very stressed.
I know the story comes from actual case files but it is too much concentrated on the stock aspect more than the investigation/police work, that it was very boring for me. Maybe because we expect more thriller in police dramas. Wang Kai as always is very good though.

I would start another one right away to get over crappy endings. If you like police dramas, I am currently watching Reborn. It it open ended as I heard but it is interesting.
